Detroit shooting guard Jaden Ivey will be unavailable for about a month

Just hours before the team’s final preseason game tips off, the Detroit Pistons announced that fourth-year guard Jaden Ivey underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today and will be sidelined for about a month as a result.

Here is the message from the Pistons’ press release:

“Pistons guard Jaden Ivey underwent an arthroscopic procedure earlier today to relieve right knee discomfort.  The procedure and discomfort are unrelated to the fibula injury suffered last season.  Ivey will begin the rehabilitation process immediately and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.”

Ivey suited up for the Pistons preseason opener against the Grizzlies on Monday, Oct. 6, and the Purdue guard started the contest and logged 14 total minutes in the first half. Ivey went 2-5 from the field for seven points, one rebound and one assist against Memphis, and he looked predictably speedy as he raced up and down the court. Ivey didn’t quite have his rhythm back, but he seemed to move around well on the floor.

After that, Ivey was held out of the Pistons’ second preseason game three days later, and he was inactive for the team’s exhibition game on Tuesday against the Cavs as well. So, it appears the team was aware that Ivey was going through a situation in which he felt less than fully healthy. And from a larger perspective, an injury setback is not quite what Ivey wants since he’s coming back from a season-ending broken leg from last season.

Bickerstaff Says Cunningham, LeVert, Sasser And Ivey Are Day-To-Day Bickerstaff Says Cunningham, LeVert, Sasser And Ivey Are Day-To-Day A collection of Pistons guards are all slightly dinged up right now.

With Ivey out of the picture for the start of Detroit’s regular season schedule, the Pistons will need to rely on Caris LeVert, Duncan Robinson and Ron Holland II to step up in his absence, but Detroit planned to run a bunch of lineups with multiple ball handlers already. Versatility was a popular talking point for the Pistons throughout preseason, and that ethos will be tested right off the bat with the shooting guard depth in Detroit.

Another key element in this situation is the looming rookie contract extension deadline on Oct. 20. Both Ivey and Jalen Duren are eligible for extensions at that point, but it is unclear what the result will be. However, Ivey underwent a surgery that'll have him sidelined for around a month, so that does not bode well for his extension prospects.

The Pistons will play their final preseason game tonight at 7 pm against the Washington Wizards at home.
