Here is an excerpt released by the Pistons after their All-Star floor general received the award:

“The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, Cunningham averaged 28.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 9.4 assists while shooting 45.6% from the field in 17 games across October and November. Through 18 games this season, Cunningham has averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 9.3 assists per game in 36.8 minutes per game. His 9.3 assists per game lead the Eastern Conference and rank second in the NBA (Nikola Jokic) and would be the highest average by a Piston since Isiah Thomas (10.0, 1986-87). His 28.2 points per game is the highest scoring average by a Piston since Jerry Stackhouse’s 29.8 points per game in 2000-01.

The Arlington, Texas, native is one of three players in the NBA this season averaging at least 28.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game, joining Luka Doncic of the L.A. Lakers and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. Cunningham ranks second in the NBA in fourth-quarter points per game (9.9), second in assists per game (9.3) and 10th in points per game (28.2) and leads all NBA guards averaging 13.0 points in the paint per game.”

Bickerstaff: Ron Holland ‘Was The Spark’ In Pistons’ 1-Point Win Over Hawks Bickerstaff: Ron Holland ‘Was The Spark’ In Pistons’ 1-Point Win Over Hawks Pistons second-year forward Ron Holland stepped up in a big way on Monday

Last night, Cunningham showcased his penchant for closing out close games in dazzling fashion. With the Pistons up by two over the Hawks and less than 30 seconds remaining, Cunningham weaved through the Atlanta defense, hit them with a clever spin move and finished at the rim with a clutch reverse lay-up. Cunningham’s game-breaking move put Detroit in the lead 95-99, and the Pistons eventually saw out what was a one-point victory over a talented Hawks squad.

Last season, Cunningham was named to the All-NBA third-team as a result of his standout play in leading the Pistons to the playoffs. Now in his fifth season, Cunningham is laser-focused on taking Detroit as far as they can go in the postseason this go around.
