Now in his second season coaching the Detroit Pistons, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has had some time to let his system sink in with his players. Bickerstaff is fortunate to have point guard Cade Cunningham carrying out a lot of the team's action, and the All-Star floor general is really blossoming into one of the league's elite players in his fifth season.
Recently, Bickerstaff took some time to sit down with the ESPN's Tim Legler to break down some tape. So far this season, the Pistons are off to a 17-5 start and lay claim to the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference, and a lot of that success is due to players buying into the system because Detroit has suffered a lot of injuries already. And with those absences, Bickerstaff has been able ot make key substitutions in order to keep carrying out the defense-oriented, high tempo offense that loves to put up points in the paint.
During the interview, Bickerstaff particularly focused on the spacing that Detroit's players keep while on offense. Typically, Cunningham will start off with the ball and engage in some screen action with Jalen Duren or Isaiah Stewart. During those instances, the Pistons count on wing players like Duncan Robinson or Jaden Ivey to space the floor and keep the defense honest with the threat of a perimeter shot.
Detroit Pistons Deviated From Identity In 113-109 Loss To Milwaukee Bucks
The Pistons switched it up against Milwaukee, and the results were not favorable
Cunningham has grown very comfortable negotiating those screen situations, and he's been able to help Duren turn into one of the most prolific paint scorers in the league this season. Duren is averaging north of 19 points and 12 rebounds per game, and that production is a testament to Cunningham's ability to carry out the Pistons' focal points on offense.
Earlier tonight, Cunningham stopped by Ford Field as the Detroit Lions are hosting the Dallas Cowboys for Thursday Night Football. Cunningham, who is a Texas native, is a bit conflicted from a rooting perspective since he's grown close to many members of the Lions team, but that is beside the point.

During an interview with Richard Sherman and Ryan Fitzpatrick prior to the game, Cunningham spoke about Bickerstaff's system and how he's able to operate efficiently since the Pistons have a bit of continuity under their belt now. It is critically important that Cunningham not only understands but believes in the Pistons' offensive system, and he delivered a clear affirmative answer about that prior to kickoff.
