The Detroit Pistons will host the Boston Celtics for the very first game of the 2026-27 NBA regular season
With the full slate of games for the 2026-27 campaign set to arrive later this week, the NBA announced a teaser of high-ticket contests earlier today that even the casual fan would want to know about, and the Detroit Pistons are included right from the jump.
To mark the very first regular season game of the NBA calendar, the Pistons will host the Boston Celtics for matchup No. 1 this season on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 3 pm. Although the contest did not exactly receive prime billing with the matinee tip-off time, the matchup is part of a three-game triple-header for the league with the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks squaring off at 7 pm and the Oklahoma City Thunder battling the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 pm.
Given the matchmaking, the NBA is clearly prioritizing teams that fared well for most of last season with the Sixers as the lone caveat to that rule after their middle-of-the-pack regular season finish. However, Philly has two new superstars on their roster in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, so they’re projected to be one of the top squads in the Eastern Conference once the season tips off.
As for the initial contest, the Pistons and Celtics represent a rematch of the No. 1 and 2 teams from the East during the regular season with Paul George joining the C’s outfit this offseason. But a year ago, Detroit held a decided advantage with a 3-1 edge in the season series against Boston, although the greatest margin of victory across the four games was just a seven-point win for the Pistons on Dec. 15 (112-105), so another tightly-contested battle is expected for the resumption of the NBA regular season this go-around. With regards to the Celtics, their lone victory against the Pistons last year occurred in the NBA Cup when Cade Cunningham prepared a 42-point, five-assist performance despite the squad’s 117-114 loss.
Don’t expect this season’s first matchup between Detroit and Boston to resemble many of the games from last season, though, considering the roster turnover that’s already taken place this summer. In addition to George joining the Celtics, the squad will welcome Jayson Tatum back after he missed all four meetings last year, so Boston will test their new group on the road against the Eastern Conference’s top seed from last season.
As for the Pistons, the Motown squad has retooled on a large scale with Tobias Harris, Marcus Sasser, Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert moving on to new teams during the offseason to make way for John Collins, Isaiah Joe, Taurean Prince, Gary Harris and Ebuka Okorie. From a macro-view, the Pistons should operate as a more efficient three-point shooting unit this year with better floor spacing and more balance, and this battle with the Celtics will be their first opportunity to see how the new group stacks up against other top talent.
Last season, the Pistons dropped their Opening Night matchup against the Chicago Bulls by a 115-111 margin, so Detroit is looking for a better intro to their season opener this time around.
