Despite a slow initial start to the 2025-26 regular season, Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham quickly shifted into gear, and he hasn’t looked back since. Cunningham has had Detroit in first place of the Eastern Conference ever since the club put together a 13-game win streak from November into December, and today the talented two-way maestro received a batch of credit for his hard work.
Cunningham, who is averaging 25.9 points and 9.6 assists per game, was just announced as one of the starters for the NBA All-Star game next month, marking his second consecutive selection to the mid-season exhibition game. This time, however, the mid-year break will be a bit more memorable since Cunningham will start the All-Star game for the first time in his career.
Truthfully, Cunningham’s selection to the All-Star game was never in doubt given his position in the fan vote over the last month. Cunningham was a top five vote recipient for the entire voting process, which is a testament to the national appeal that Cade had built up.
Now, the rest of the All-Star game roster is yet to be revealed, but Cunningham may attend the game with one of his Detroit teammates in tow. Pistons center Jalen Duren, who is also in the midst of a career season, is one of the most talented centers in the Eastern Conference, and he’s had a breakout season working the two-man game with Cunningham in the pick and roll. The two have long stood as the NBA’s most dangerous lob threat, especially in transition, but the dynamic duo has extended that facet to become a key piece of their half court offense as well.
This season, the NBA All-Star game is going to feature a Team USA vs Team World component, so the actual basketball will not be delivered in the classic Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference fashion. The NBA stuck with this new, adjusted format after debuting the changes last year, and the Pistons may have a pair of representatives on the court between the lines.
Just outside the lines, however, Detroit may have another member of their organization influencing the game since J.B. Bickerstaff is the current favorite to coach a squad with the Pistons in first place of the Eastern Conference.
Later tonight, the Pistons are going to square off with the Boston Celtics in hopes of moving to 3-1 on the season series. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm on Peacock.
