With the NBA Playoffs just around the corner, it’s difficult not to speculate about first round matchups and potential opponents for the Detroit Pistons after the squad locked up the top seed in the Eastern Conference three games ago.

The Pistons have an opportunity to make considerable noise in the postseason after maintaining control over the East for nearly the entire length of the regular season after jumping into first place back in November. Now, Detroit stands at 58-22 with two games remaining, which means the Motown squad has an opportunity to hit the 60-win threshold for only the third time in franchise history.

But in order to do so, the Pistons have a difficult showdown with the Charlotte Hornets on the docket tomorrow night, and it’s one that will be laced with a significant amount of preexisting conflict after their mid-season brawl. This meeting will mark the first time the Pistons and Hornets have seen each other since that memorable scrap back in February

During that fisticuff-filled contest, both Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart were among the four players ejected with Miles Bridge and Moussa Diabate also exiting the game for their roles in the fight. Duren was subsequently suspended for two games, while Beef Stew caught a seven-game suspension in the aftermath of his bench-fleeing activity

From a wider perspective, the Hornets have been one of the NBA’s surprise stories with Charlotte boasting one of the most effective five-man rotations in the entire league based on an efficiency and plus-minus standpoint. The Hornets are young, they play with aggression, and they’re unlikely to have already forgotten about the altercation with Detroit two months ago. However, the Pistons are 2-0 against Charlotte this season, so another victory tonight would give Detroit a season sweep in the three-game series.

The Hornets are locked into a play-in position right now, so the home team is not in any jeopardy of dropping out of the postseason regardless of the outcome tonight. Based on that reality, it’s possible that Charlotte operates with a heightened degree of caution in order to avoid any disciplinary action that lingers into the playoffs considering Detroit will likely lean in that direction as well with more meaningful basketball ahead of the squad.

After that storyline-laden matchup, the Pistons will travel to Indiana for a Central Division showdown with the Pacers to wrap up their regular season schedule. After losing Tyrese Haliburton for the entire year, the Pacers struggled mightily from the get-go during the 2025-26 campaign, and the former Finals participants are headed for a lottery selection in the upcoming NBA Draft given their 18-61 record, which is one game off the pace for the worst in the league.

While the Pistons will be in a strong position entering the postseason whether they hit the 60-win mark or not, doing so would give Detroit another reason to celebrate what’s unfolded as an unforgettable run for the Motor City team thus far.
