Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham received a big honor today

Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham joined a very exclusive club on Monday.

During a sit-down with Kevin Durant on The Boardroom, Cunningham announced that he’s signing a new six-year extension to his contract with Nike, and as a part of the deal Cunningham will become one of six active NBA players with their own signature shoe.

With Cunningham tabbed to receive his own signature sneaker, the Pistons floor general joins a group of LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant, Devin Booker and KD himself. Now, the shoe will not be available for some time as it’s expected to drop during the second half of the 2026-27 season according to ESPN.

Now, during Cunningham’s time on The Boardroom with Durant, it was KD who took the opportunity to express his appreciation for Cade’s game. Durant, who is a self-proclaimed basketball nerd himself, enjoys the finer parts of playing basketball, so the two simply talked hoops for a while before discussing how special it is for Cunningham to have his own signature shoe with Nike.

During the conversation, Durant and Cunningham spoke about some tough times Cade experienced during his development, such as multiple family members passing away once he arrived at Monteverde Academy. Shortly after that, Cunningham found out he was going to be a father– quite a whirlwind period of the then-five-star prospect. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, Cunningham turned it into motivation and used his situation as another source of inspiration to succeed and eventually wind up in the NBA.

Now several years later, Cunningham has delivered on that goal as the starting point guard for the Detroit Pistons, and he’s now positioning himself as one of the top players in the league. So far, Cade has shown that he was born with the clutch gene with the highest fourth quarter scoring average in the league, but hearing his backstory helps explain why Cunningham stays so smooth when the pressure is on.

This season, Cunningham has been a pivotal piece of the Pistons’ early-season success, helping the team to an active nine-game winning streak and the first place position in the Eastern Conference. Cunningham is averaging 27.5 points and 9.9 assists per game, both of which are career high totals. Cunningham, however, has been sidelined for the past two games as he recovers from a right hip contusion, and he’s listed as questionable for the teams matchup with the Indiana Pacers tonight.
