Two big time Detroit stars from the Pistons and Lions could be linking up on the podcast circuit sooner rather than later

Over the past several years, Detroit Pistons star point guard Cade Cunningham has done a good job of ingratiating himself within the Motown sports community. Last season, Cunningham went to the Detroit Lions week 14 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field, and the home squad took care of business with a convincing 44-30 victory over their NFC opponent.

Since Cunningham grew up in Texas, it was no surprise to see the All-NBA point guard pop up at the Thursday Night Football game last season, but it underscores a sense of community that several Motor City athletes have built amongst each other over the last several years.

To repay the favor to Cunningham, a few members of the Lions made it a point to show up for the Pistons’ game seven matchup against the Orlando Magic in the first round of the NBA Playoffs back in May. With Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams in attendance, both Cunningham and Tobias Harris eclipsed the 30-point threshold to keep the Pistons alive in the playoffs, and Detroit provided a lot of support for that huge game.

With that connection providing some pre-text, St. Brown was recently asked who he would most like to have appear as a guest on his show, The St. Brown Podcast, which is recorded with his brother, Equanimeous, and the Lions standout had a clear answer to that question.

“For a dream guest on the podcast, at one I’ve gotta go with Cade Cunningham— just the way he’s been playing,” St. Brown said. “He’s a hooper, and he brought some life back into Pistons basketball, so I would say Cade.”

Since St. Brown and Cunningham are both preparing for a long regular season with their respective squads, now would be as good of a time as any for the Detroit stars to link up on the podcast circuit, but the proclamation also underscores how tight-knit the fraternity is among athletes in Detroit at the moment. Over the past couple years, Aidan Hutchinson has been a regular guest for Pistons games at Little Caesars Arena, so the supportive atmosphere is part of a broader two-way street among Motor City athletes that stretches back several decades.

In fact, there’s a famous photograph from 1990 that shows Joe Dumars, Steve Yzerman, Cecil Fielder and Barry Sanders all standing together at Tiger Stadium that has made the rounds over the years, and it’s a timeless representation of the camaraderie among athletes in Detroit, such as St. Brown and Cunningham.

Now, recording a podcast together might not match up as the perfect modern day equivalent to taking a photo together, but it does highlight a relationship between the Pistons and Lions organizations. And with both the NFL and NBA set to ramp up over the next several months, it would not be a surprise if there are some more Pistons-Lions crossovers to come sooner rather than later with a potential St. Brown-Cunningham podcast episode among them.
