With training camp opening next week, the Detroit Pistons still have not been able to reach a long-term agreement with restricted free agent Jalen Duren
From any measure, the restricted free agency contract negotiations between the Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren have been far from smooth during the offseason. Though the negotiating process was billed as a rather seamless process by Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon during the summer, the reality has been anything but.
After several months without a signed contract to produce, Duren is running out of time before training camp starts in less than one week. The Pistons have reportedly increased their offer again to five years and $200 million in a last-ditch effort to persuade the 22-year old All-Star center to sign his deal, but there are more factors to the negotiation than just money.
Of course, Duren is rumored to feel slighted after the offers he’s received from the Pistons during the summer, but that is an intangible personal problem that can only be resolved through time. In terms of real-life stipulations, Detroit was interested in slipping in a weight clause to Duren’s new deal to ensure that the big man continues to operate at a healthy playing weight.
“That [new deal] has also included incentives like weight clauses to my understanding, and that has all played a part in this as well,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said. “Over the last several weeks, been kind of quiet on this front. The sides have picked up communication, and I am told right now the Pistons offer to Jalen Duren is $200 million over five years.”
Last season, Duren increased his offensive output to 19.5 points per game while continuing to shoot over 60% from the field and grabbing over 10 rebounds each night. Given that impact and growth, Duren finished in second-place for the Most Improved Player award, but he bulked up a lot prior to his fourth season as a pro, which led to questions regarding his conditioning. So, the Pistons were looking to place a weight clause into his deal so that he stays in shape moving forward, but there is conflicting information about this detail.
According to The Athletic, the Pistons were pushing for the weight clause to wind up in Duren’s contract, but league sources suggest that it was only a verbal conversation as opposed to the more formal agreement based on Charania’s reporting. Either way, Duren is running out of time since his deadline to accept his qualifying offer is Oct. 1.
If Duren does take his QO, then he’d make just $9.6 million next season while simultaneously swallowing a position pill between himself and the Pistons with unrestricted free agency waiting on the other side of the 2026-27 campaign. Training camp is set to open up next week, so there will assuredly be an update on the Duren situation in the near future.
