The two-way play of Isaiah Stewart has been an aberration for the Pistons this season, but the newly-minted starter left Detroit’s 125-107 win over the Brooklyn Nets with an apparent ankle injury on Friday night.
In the second quarter, Stewart was involved in the transition game after a Brooklyn miss and landed awkwardly on his left leg in the process, falling to the floor in a concerning fashion. Stewart turned his left ankle completely, but he was already running during the motion so a bit of his weight was displaced, making it easier to bear.
Stewart stayed in the game, though he was clearly limping a bit immediately after taking his spill, and Beef Stew continued to nurse a sore ankle for a couple minutes longer before exiting the game for Jalen Duren. By that point, Stewart had logged four points, three rebounds and one assist in nine minutes, and his return to the contest was put into question.

The Pistons went into halftime with a 60-55 lead, but Detroit did not exit the locker room with Stewart in the lineup. Instead, Ron Holland II opened up the second half, and Stewart rested his ankle for the remainder of Detroit’s 18-point victory.
After the game, Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff did not elaborate on Stewart’s injury status, but more information is expected when Detroit submits its injury report prior to Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Up until this point, Beef Stew was having a bit of a breakout season. Stewart has always provided energy and defensive prowess, but the 6-8 rim-protector has added some offensive flair and a steady jumper to his game as well. Stewart was averaging 11.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game prior to Friday night’s win in the NBA Cup over the Nets.
If Stewart and Tobias Harris are not healthy enough to play on Sunday, then Detroit would likely turn to Holland to complete its starting lineup. It is unclear when Harris is set to return to the court for the Pistons.
