The Detroit Pistons are about to enter an absolutely crucial portion of the offseason with Jalen Duren’s contract situation taking center stage
Entering the offseason, it was fairly clear that the chief objective for the Detroit Pistons this summer would revolve around All-Star center Jalen Duren’s contract situation. After Duren signed a qualifying offer within the last week, the big man immediately turned into a restricted free agent when the signing period opens up today, but Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon expressed that he looked forward to reaching an agreement with Duren’s representation.
At the time of Langdon’s comments, it appeared that Detroit was planning for Duren to return for the 2026-27 campaign after four years in the Motor City. In the playoffs, the Pistons were steadfast in sticking by Duren’s side even when he struggled mightily against the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the dynamic between the organization and the Memphis product has shifted due to a material change in the negotiating process.
According to Senior NBA Insider for NBA on Prime’s Chris Haynes, Duren intends to use his restricted free agent status to meet with the Sacramento Kings on the first day of free agency in hopes that he can swing a deal to transition out of the Motor City.
“This is not a leverage play,” Haynes said. “This is real, legit, serious interest on Jalen Duren’s part. He is hoping that they can come to terms on some type of deal and then get Detroit to play ball. Now, I reported a couple days ago that Detroit had no intentions of moving Jalen Duren, but if sides are far apart, if Duren can try to work something out with the Kings, I think they will have no option but to play ball. And if a deal is finalized, I think it would probably make sense that Domantas Sabonis for the Kings would be included in the deal going back to Detroit to give Detroit some frontcourt help.”
As Haynes alluded to, it would behoove the Pistons to target some big man in any potential deal for JD considering Detroit dealt away Isaiah Stewart during the 2026 NBA Draft. On top of that transaction, there have been few indications that Tobias Harris will be returning to the Pistons even though Langdon spoke positively of that prospective return shortly after Detroit’s playoff run ended.
But if Duren’s alleged interest in the Kings organization was not enough of a surprise, The Athletic’s Sam Amick also reported that JD is expected to hold a similar meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers to see if that squad can convince the Pistons to trade their 22-year old All-Star center. Now, the Lakers do not have the same level of high-end big men to send to Motown in exchange for Duren, which would make that deal a bit more difficult to pull off, but it is noteworthy that multiple teams have already entered the race for his services.
In this situation, the rub comes from the Pistons' side of the equation. According to Omari Sankofa of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit has no intentions of trading Duren away, which means that this effort from JD could be all for nought.
Before the playoffs began, Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, which was good enough to secure an All-NBA Third Team position for his handiwork. But once the postseason began, Duren struggled to produce at the same level against either the Magic or the Cavs once they used drop coverage to help contain the athletic center who feasted on lob plays and pick-and-roll sets in the regular season.
Up until this point, the Pistons have considered Duren as one of their most important foundational pieces given his youth, athleticism and still-improving skill set, but the team may be a bit hesitant to offer JD a max or supermax deal given his playoff struggles, which has clearly opened the door for the Kings and the Lakers to make a run at the restricted free agent.
