The Detroit Pistons could feature in a blockbuster three-team trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and Tyler Herro ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft
Even though the 2026 NBA Draft is just around the corner on June 23, the league might see a bit of fireworks ahead of time. After a rumor-filled Trade Deadline that ultimately went nowhere for the superstar forward, Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly on the verge of being traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, but the two organizations may need a third team to step in for the deal to make financial sense on all sides.
That’s where the Detroit Pistons enter the picture alongside Tyler Herro.
Entering the offseason, the Pistons were clearly in need of adding both a three-point shooting threat and a secondary scorer. Ideally, those two traits would appear in the same player, and that’s part of what makes Herro such an intriguing option for Detroit in the three-team trade.
There has been a lot of scuttlebutt surrounding Giannis and the Heat for quite some time now, but Miami would naturally need to clear some cap space in order to pull off the trade. Next season, Giannis is slated to make $58.4 million in the middle section of a three-year deal according to Spotrac, so it makes sense for Miami to find a new team to take on the final season of Herro’s four-year, $120 million deal.
Of course, the Pistons would need to part ways with multiple assets in order to make the prospective three-team trade attractive for all parties involved. Big man Isaiah Stewart is a valuable defensive ace with rim protection skills who’s on a team-friendly contract at the moment, so it would not be a shock for another team to pursue Beef Stew on the trade market. Additionally, players such as Caris LeVert and Ron Holland have been rumored to potentially change locations this summer as well, so it’s possible that the Bucks could end up with any combination of those three role players.
Together, the trio of Stewart, LeVert and Holland are set to make just under $40 million for the 2026-27 campaign, so that’s a decent chunk of salary to dish out, and it would give the Pistons enough room to comfortably fit Herro into their budget. In fact, Detroit would save about $7 million from those rough numbers alone, which could come in handy with the draft and free agency approaching.
From a fit standpoint, Herro doesn’t offer nearly the same level of defense that the Pistons are used to from Holland, Stewart or even LeVert for that matter, but Detroit would not be adding the Kentucky product for his contributions on that side of the ball. Instead, Herro would slot in as a consistent 20 point per game scorer who can fill the bucket from downtown at a 38% rate.
Since the Pistons are in the market to improve in those two areas– perimeter and secondary scoring– during the offseason, a three-team trade with the Bucks and Heat that would send Herro to the Motor City effectively checks both of those boxes at once. There is some belief around the basketball landscape that the deal could be agreed to as soon as this weekend, which would dovetail well with the draft following just a few days later.
