Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly working with his team to find a trade partner

It is no secret that Milwaukee Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has been pushing his squad to go all-in and surround him with more talented pieces in pursuit of bringing an NBA Championship to the much-maligned franchise. Now, Giannis is fed up with that lack of progress, and he’s showing that he is serious about winning a title, whether that will be with or without the Bucks or not.

According to ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania, Giannis is currently working with his agent and his support group to help the Bucks find a suitable trading partner for the All-NBA talent. There have been rumors that Giannis was growing unhappy with the Bucks since the team failed to make a splash in free agency, and that dispute is reportedly coming to a head.

At the moment, Giannis is set to turn 31 in just a few days. The window for Giannis to add a championship to his resume is closing, and he knows it. So, the best option for Antetokounmpo may be to join a big market team that can entice at least one other superstar to move there while making a push for postseason success.

    Where Will Giannis Go?

Now, the big question in this case is which team has the assets required to satisfy Milwaukee’s asking price? Certainly, the Bucks would expect a major return for a likable All-Star with superior defensive abilities and several years remaining on his contract. Milwaukee would also likely require a healthy collection of future first round draft picks in exchange for their franchise player, so it’s a hypothetical deal that would come with a lot of moving parts.

But from that surface level trade package, one with several first round picks and a few talented, young players, two teams immediately stand out as asset-rich– the Detroit Pistons and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, the Thunder obviously have more draft capital than any organization in the league, so they could pull off a deal for Giannis pretty seamlessly. Detroit, however, does not have as many first rounders to bargain with but could potentially have more attractive ready-now role players that would help the Bucks stay above water in a post-Giannis era.

In order to make a deal for Giannis come to fruition, the Pistons would almost certainly be expected to part ways with Ron Holland II and Jaden Ivey. Both young players with bright futures, Holland and Ivey have high ceilings and the former is a defensive ace. So, the pair has a lot of value, and when combined with Tobias Harris could help bridge the gap for Milwaukee after Giannis.

Now, a trade package involving Holland, Ivey and Harris would likely need multiple first round picks attached to make the deal work. The Pistons own all of their picks over the next several years, but there are other complications that could alter the likelihood of a deal moving across the finish line.

Both in the Central Division, the Pistons and the Bucks have played in a number of contentious games over the past several seasons. Giannis specifically has mixed it up with Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart, so it is unknown if Antetokounmpo is even interested in moving to Detroit. According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, Antetokounmpo’s representatives are informing the Bucks where the talented Greek forward would like to land, essentially dictating Giannis’ future team in the pre-trade process. Antetokounmpo has talked a lot about playing in a high-profile American city, and he feels that is the best plan for all of the European stars in the NBA.

In fact, Antetokounmpo was quoted mentioning that he believed Luka Doncic should go to the Los Angeles Lakers and that Nikola Jokic should go to the New York Knicks. The former obviously came to fruition, but the latter has not happened yet. Perhaps Giannis could influence this move by forcing a trade to the Knicks himself.

In the meantime, Giannis and the Bucks will face off with the Pistons tonight at 8 pm in a Central Division battle.
