Kyle Lowry will have his jersey number retired by the Raptors.
The Toronto Raptors recently held a press conference for Kyle Lowry, who signed a one-day contract to retire with the team. Lowry played in Toronto from the 2012-13 season through the 2020-21 campaign. Retiring with the Raptors as the franchise's best player was already an honor of its own, but Lowry received a surprise right before getting announced for the press conference.
The Raptors recently released a behind-the-scenes video of the day. The video focused on Lowry's reaction while being announced for the press conference. When it was announced that Toronto would be retiring Lowry's jersey No. 7, the guard looked surprised.
"He said they are going to retire my jersey?" Lowry asked.
It is quite the honor for a player who enjoyed a tremendous NBA career. He was a six-time All-Star and an NBA champion with the Raptors in 2019. While Lowry also spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers during his career in the NBA, his best seasons came with the Raptors.
The only other player in the franchise's history to have their jersey retired is former star Vince Carter, who had his jersey No. 15 retired by the team.
Kyle Lowry is often considered to be the greatest Raptors player of all-time, however.
What Kyle Lowry Said About His Impressive Career
There were questions about how much success Lowry would find at the NBA level when he first entered the league. While he was a good player, Lowry did not have the size many preferred when it comes to star players. Yet, Lowry would go on to silence the doubters and enjoy an impressive NBA career.
"I'm six feet... to be in a situation to do the things I've done, I think is pretty spectacular," Lowry said during his press conference in early July.
What Lowry accomplished in the NBA is certainly quite spectacular. The Raptors were not expected to win the 2019 championship, but they found a way to get the job done. Lowry played a crucial role in helping Toronto upset expectations that season.
For Lowry, he spent his entire career upsetting expectations. If anyone doubted him, he often found a way to prove them wrong.
Now, he is retiring as the greatest Raptors player of all-time, and no Toronto player will ever wear No. 7 again. That number belongs to Lowry, and he is more than deserving of having his jersey number retired.
