The superstar is the topic of discussion for one of the biggest scandals in NBA history, but that wasn't stopping his offseason plans.

This NBA offseason will go down in history as one of the most memorable for several reasons, but none greater than the infamous scandal involving Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Clippers, and former lead sponsor Aspiration. While the controversy was put on display last summer, it wasn’t until the seven-time All-Star was traded to the Toronto Raptors that it became a relevant issue.

It has been almost 11 months since the start of the investigation, yet there was very little noise around the alleged cheating during the entire 2025-26 season. As soon as Leonard was set to start fresh again with the franchise he brought its first and only championship, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made sure that the two-time Finals MVP would not be relieved of his punishments just because he left Los Angeles.

It has now been just under six weeks since the trade was initially agreed upon, and there is still no official update. Reports have suggested that Leonard could potentially have his contract voided rather than suspended (via Michael Grange), but until Silver puts out a statement, nothing is set in stone.

As the NBA season inches closer with still no resolution, it would be reasonable for Leonard and his team to have a level of fear of what’s to come, assuming the allegations are accurate. Instead, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year had an announcement to make this week.

While some may have expected Leonard to post a video providing an update, confession, or plea of innocence, he instead announced to the natives of Hong Kong that he would be making a trip to Asia on August 15th. There, he’ll be hosting youth camps, basketball clinics, fan festival events, and more to help continue to grow the sport globally. He’ll also have the opportunity to continue to promote his partnership with New Balance, along with his own personal streetwear brand, MANMYTH.

Had any other player made this announcement, almost nobody would bat an eye. But because it’s the one player who is being watched by nearly the entire NBA, the move seems somewhat careless or distasteful to some. On the other hand, some fans believe this is a perfect sentiment of Kawhi’s confidence that the whole situation will eventually blow over.

At this point, nobody outside of the investigation knows the specific, concrete details of the conflict. Posting a video reaching out to the Asian fans with a smile on his face suggests that Leonard isn’t stressing too much about whether he’ll receive a suspension or see his contract voided. With other reports indicating that he’ll be ready for training camp in Quebec City with the Raptors, this may be exactly what the Toronto fans needed to ensure that the trade will ultimately go through.
