As soon as it feels like it's over, more information comes out to damage the superstar's reputation.
Now that the Toronto Raptors are finally in the same month as media day and the start of training camp, all they can do is hope that the Kawhi Leonard investigation will end as soon as possible. The trade sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft capital to the Los Angeles Clippers will not be completed until it is clear what punishments will be levied against the seven-time All-Star, if any. It has been reported that the expectation is for Leonard to join the Raptors for training camp in Quebec City, unless his contract is voided by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, which would create a massive hiccup in the franchise’s plans to begin the regular season.
Being that it is just one day until the investigation reaches the one-year mark, one would expect the drama to have been solved long ago. The reason it hasn’t is that more and more accusations are being made against the former No. 15 pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Now, just over a month and a half away from the start of the 2026-27 regular season, one of the trades of the summer will be set to remain in limbo because of another new addition to the investigation.

Vasquez-Imagn ImagesNew information has arisen from The Athletic’s Pablo Torre, the man who is responsible for igniting the controversy by uploading an episode of his podcast showcasing the malpractice. On Aug. 14th, Torre provided extensive information regarding the former San Diego State Aztec having a partnership with Clippers scoreboard sponsor Daktronics, which played a part in the salary cap circumvention due to his failure to complete work to validate the substantial contract. This piece of the investigation was seemingly swept under the rug because it was secretly already taken into consideration over the year-long search for evidence.
Today, Torre quoted the tweet, adding breaking news alongside his report from weeks ago.
“BREAKING: The SEC has opened an investigation into Daktronics concerning Kawhi Leonard, according to the scoreboard-maker's CFO on their earnings call today,” said Torre. "’The Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking information from us concerning the company and [Kawhi] Leonard,’” said CFO Howard Atkins. “‘We take these requests seriously and are cooperating.’"

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is an independent federal agency of the United States government whose purpose is to maintain the integrity of financial systems in all public companies, concerning investors, markets, and capital information. The reason this has a significant impact on the NBA’s investigation is that without Torre’s reporting, the league may have been able to privately assess the information and dictate the timeline or severity of punishments. With a government organization taking matters into its own hands, not only is there potential for the drama to be extended, but legal action could come into play for both parties if convicted.
Bringing back the Raptors into the conversation, this seemed like it would be the worst news to hear. One would assume that adding another investigation to the mix would stall the trade process further, but ESPN's Shams Charania swooped in to immediately put that possibility to rest. The NBA Senior Insider finally announced that the NBA has completed its investigation, dictating that Leonard would not receive any suspension or voided contract. Now it's only a matter of time until the superstar is back with the team in which he won his most recent championship and Finals MVP.
That doesn't entirely mean he's off the hook just yet. While an outside investigation likely wouldn't have any effect on his ability to play in the NBA, there is still lots of unknown information regarding this new investigation and whether or not it could affect his future in the league. Should the SEC take legal action with the superstar, it may alter his ability to continue playing further down the road when all findings have concluded. For now, Raptors fans can rejoice that they can finally look forward to the next season with a top-10 player next to Scottie Barnes.
