Darko Rajaković praised Scottie Barnes’ all-around brilliance in the Raptors' crucial Game 3 victory over the Cavaliers.

Scottie Barnes had a point to prove Thursday night. Down 2-0 in their first-round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Toronto Raptors needed arguably their best player to show up at Scotiabank Arena. And he delivered the most complete playoff performance of his career.

Barnes finished with a career playoff-high 33 points, 11 assists and five rebounds. He went 11-of-17 from the field and imposed his will on both ends of the floor in a 126-104 blowout that gave Toronto its first win of the series.

Darko Rajaković didn’t need much prompting when asked about Barnes after Thursday’s Game 3 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“He did everything for us tonight,” Rajaković said, crediting Barnes for his defensive discipline in containing Donovan Mitchell and James Harden while simultaneously leading the offense.

It was the kind of performance that makes the Toronto Raptors’ head coach look very smart for building his system around a 24-year-old who has been doing this in various forms since the night he was drafted.

Barnes was selected fourth overall by the Raptors in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Florida State, where he played one season and earned ACC Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year honors.  At 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Barnes was a point guard in a forward’s body and he wasted no time proving why he should be the face of the Raptors franchise.

In his rookie season, Barnes played 74 games and averaged 15.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. He had the best win shares among rookies and was the only first-year player to rank in the top five in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Barnes helped the Raptors to a fifth-place finish in the Eastern Conference and was named Rookie of the Year.

Fast forward to 2024, Barnes earned his first All-Star selection, becoming the first member of his draft class to do so. And two seasons later, he has taken his level of play to a higher altitude.

Scottie Barnes Has Been Crucial to the Raptors’ Success This Season

Barnes averaged 18.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.8 stocks per game during the regular season, and his two-way dominance was enough to earn him his second All-Star selection.

The series against Cleveland has been perhaps Barnes’ biggest test yet. Barnes contributed 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting with seven assists, but his effort was not enough as Toronto suffered a 126-113 road loss in Game 1. In Game 2, Barnes led the Raptors with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting, adding five assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block in 40 minutes, but the Cavaliers edged the Raptors 115-105.

Over three games, Barnes has averaged 26.7 points, 5.7 assists and done so while being the primary assignment on Cleveland’s two most dangerous offensive players. No other Raptor has come close to that level of impact on both ends.

Game 4 tips off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. If the Raptors are going to make this a series, Barnes will be the reason why.
