The Toronto Raptors impressed against the Orlando Magic, but questions remain entering the playoffs.
The Toronto Raptors’ 139-87 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday was one of their most dominant performances of the season, but it also came at a critical point in their schedule. Toronto improved to 42-32 and are holding fast to the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference with eight games remaining. The win also brought much-needed momentum for the team amid a recent stretch of inconsistent play.
After an impressive half of the season, the Raptors have experienced a slump since the All-Star break, with nine losses in 19 games. Toronto struggled to maintain consistency and has dropped seven of its last nine games against playoff-caliber opponents.
That stretch saw the Raptors fall as low as the sixth seed, and has raised concerns about their ability to compete in the playoffs. However, their performance against Orlando, which marked their second straight win, showed their ceiling even when shorthanded.
Raptors Playoff Outlook With Eight Games Remaining
The Raptors are 21-16 on the road, the ninth best record in the NBA. But they also maintain a 21-16 record at Scotiabank Arena, ranking as one of the worst home teams in the league (17th).
Toronto’s record against different tiers of competition also provides a clearer picture of their current form. The Raptors are 22-5 against teams that entered games below .500, showing consistency in games they are expected to win. However, they are just 20-27 against teams above .500, which means they struggle against elite competition.
That disparity remains the central concern heading into the postseason.
Against likely playoff opponents, the results have been mixed to unfavorable. Toronto has been swept 4-0 by the current third-seeded New York Knicks, with each loss coming by double digits. They have also lost three of four matchups against the second-seeded Boston Celtics. If the Raptors finish as the sixth seed and both the Celtics and Knicks maintain their position, Toronto will likely face both teams in the first and second rounds of the playoffs.
A more favorable playoff matchup for Toronto would be the Cleveland Cavaliers, who currently hold the fourth seed in the East. The Raptors swept the regular season series against Cleveland and if the standings hold, both teams could face off in the first round of the playoffs.
The recent win over Orlando does not directly address those concerns, but it showed contending teams a glimpse of what Toronto does well. When the Raptors control pace, generate turnovers and move the ball efficiently, they can produce high-level offense and limit opponents defensively.
The Raptors’ next test is set for Tuesday against the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons. Their performance against another elite team could reveal whether they are true contenders or pretenders entering the postseason.
