Likely the two best defensive duos in the league thrive in very different aspects, but can one be easily deemed better than the other?

Preseason games are officially set to begin today for the 2026-27 NBA season. What better way to start the new year with two Eastern Conference rivals with championship expectations, led by two brand new superstar duos? Two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and two-time All-Star Scottie Barnes will take the floor for the Toronto Raptors in Quebec City against the Miami Heat, led by two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo.

Both teams made very similar additions this offseason. The Raptors add a veteran wing who has led a team to a championship and won multiple DPOYs along the way. He may be entering the end of his prime, but coming off a career-high 27.9 points per game season, Leonard is widely expected to be an extremely impactful asset on both ends of the floor. As for the Heat, they had to give up much more to acquire Antetokounmpo. However, at only 31 years old, he will look to return to MVP conversations with his new franchise. He too holds a Finals MVP along with a DPOY to his resume and is looking to revolutionize the already prestigious franchise.

Adding these two superstars to an already loaded Eastern Conference will surely cause more drama in the standings. Not to mention, they very well could be the two best defensive teams in the conference because of their incredible duos. The Raptors likely take the edge in overall team defense because of the incredible scheme led by head coach Darko Rajakovic and carried out by role players like Collin Murray-Boyles, Ja’Kobe Walter, and Jamal Shead. However, when it comes to specifically the pairs, which is the better defending duo?

They are both phenomenal, likely even the two best in the NBA; but, they wreak havoc in very different ways. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo are bigs, so they primarily do their damage in the paint. While they are both extremely mobile for their size, they win games by keeping players out of the paint. Pairing the two shot-blocking machines will take lots of pressure off the perimeter players because the ball-handlers will have all the pressure waiting for them at the rim.

Leonard and Barnes, on the other hand, are wings, typically the most versatile position in basketball. These two excel at isolation defense; forcing steals, deflections, and bad shots, this duo will be terrifying to face because opposing teams won’t be able to rely on their stars for scoring against these two. That’s what makes them the most dangerous defenders in the NBA; not only will players struggle to score, but they also need to be extremely careful passing the ball. These ball hawks will block the passing lanes, come out of nowhere for help defense, and lock up whoever is brave enough to take the last shot at the end of a close game.
