Lakers Present the Raptors With a Problem They Haven’t Solved All Season

Scottie Barnes faces a daunting interior defense as Toronto battles a historic drought in Los Angeles.

The Toronto Raptors head into Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers with a chance to respond to a loss that raised familiar questions about their consistency. After beating the Orlando Magic by 30 points earlier in the week, Toronto fell 121-114 to the same team on Friday, despite Scottie Barnes putting together a 41-point performance.

That result leaves the Raptors with something to prove as they begin a Los Angeles road trip, particularly with Kawhi Leonard still unavailable. Barnes has shown he can carry a significant offensive load, but the challenge now is getting enough support around him to turn that production into wins.

Barnes has looked increasingly comfortable creating his own offense while continuing to shoulder major defensive and playmaking responsibilities. His development will be important against a Lakers team that has the size to make scoring in the paint difficult, especially with Walker Kessler protecting the rim.

Kessler has already made his presence felt defensively, recording 17 blocks through six games. That presents a difficult matchup for Barnes and RJ Barrett, both of whom rely on their ability to attack downhill. Toronto will need to find ways to get into the paint without repeatedly forcing difficult attempts against a defender capable of changing shots.

Jakob Poeltl could have a significant role in that effort. He finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Orlando, and his value to Toronto extends beyond his scoring. His screening and offensive rebounding can help create better opportunities for the guards, while his work against Kessler will be important in keeping the Lakers from controlling the interior.

Barrett’s response is another factor worth watching. After scoring at least 20 points in each of Toronto’s previous four games, he managed only nine against Orlando. The Raptors cannot afford to have their second major scoring option disappear for another night, particularly if Los Angeles devotes extra attention to Barnes.

The Lakers also bring a difficult perimeter assignment in Luka Dončić, who scored 37 points in their most recent loss to Golden State after previously erupting for 52 against Utah. Toronto’s defensive pressure could make life uncomfortable for Los Angeles, but Dončić’s ability to find teammates when defenses collapse means the Raptors will have to be disciplined behind the initial matchup.

There is also a longer-standing hurdle. Toronto has not beaten the Lakers since December 2022, giving Sunday’s game added significance as the Raptors look to establish themselves against stronger opposition.

Friday’s loss showed how quickly Toronto can lose control of a game even when Barnes is producing at an elite level. The trip to Los Angeles offers an opportunity to address that problem, with Barrett’s bounce-back and the frontcourt’s ability to compete against Kessler likely to help determine whether the Raptors can make it a more complete performance.
