Houston bounce back after their first loss of the season with an emphatic 119-98 victory over the OKC

Jabari Smith Jr. and Marcus Smart were simply too much for the Oklahoma City Thunder to handle on Halloween night, combining for 54 points to push the Houston Rockets to an emphatic 119-98 victory.

Smith put on his best performance of the young season, dropping 30 points on 10-for-18 shooting, including a lethal 6-of-12 night from beyond the arc. He added 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and a block across 33 minutes while turning the ball over just once.

Smart was both explosive and surgical in his backcourt role. He poured in 24 points, knocking down 7 of 10 three-point attempts, while adding 3 assists and 5 rebounds in 36 minutes. His hot hand provided immediate spacing, allowing Houston to maintain total control of the pace throughout the second half.

A crucial factor for the large lead was the perimeter shooting efficiency. Houston was absolutely lights-out from long range, draining 18 of their 41 attempts from deep for a blazing 43.9% clip. Oklahoma City, meanwhile, struggled to keep pace from distance, managing just 10-of-32 (31.3%) shooting from three-point territory.

Oklahoma City suffered from key absences in their frontcourt rotation, leaving Isaiah Hartenstein to anchor the paint. Hartenstein battled hard inside, snatching 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and scoring 10 points, but he couldn't single-handedly protect the rim against Houston's physical play.

Alperen Şengün came back strong in after missing the last couple games due to injury. The big man flirted with a triple-double, tallying 16 points, 9 rebounds, and a team-high 9 assists. His creative passing enabled high-percentage looks for Smith and Smart on the outside.

Kevin Durant provided smooth, efficient scoring support in his 27 minutes on the floor. Durant posted 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting while making all 6 of his free-throw attempts, adding 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 emphatic blocks to anchor the defense.

Houston dominated the physical battle on the glass, out-rebounding Oklahoma City 44 to 42 overall while securing 13 offensive boards. That extra effort translated directly into 16 points off turnovers and 13 fast-break points.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the lone bright spot for the Thunder, scoring 26 points on 10-for-20 shooting. However, OKC fell apart in the second half, and Houston ran away with the lead.

The Rockets hit their free throws when it mattered most down the stretch, which they failed to do in their opening game of the NBA Cup against the Dallas Mavericks. They finished 19-of-23 (82.6%) from the line to seal the 21-point win. Houston will look to build on this dominant performance when they host the Boston Celtics on Monday, November 2nd.
