Houston surged into the second round to land Ohio State’s elite playmaker, securing a polished, high-efficiency scorer ready to bolster the backcourt with veteran poise and versatility.
The Houston Rockets made an aggressive move on draft night, trading up to No. 31 overall before selecting Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton.
As a senior, Thornton averaged 19.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 55.4 percent from the field, 40-percent from three-point range, and 82.9-percent from the free-throw line, establishing himself as one of the nation’s most efficient scoring guards.
Thornton proved he could score from all over the floor without sacrificing efficiency. He knocked down perimeter shots at a high rate, finished inside the arc, and consistently generated offense throughout the season while serving as one of Ohio State’s primary playmakers.
The Rockets clearly valued adding another guard, and Thornton brings a polished offensive game with the experience of four collegiate seasons. At 6'0and 223 pounds, he also brings a sturdy frame and a proven track record of production against high-level competition.
While every rookie enters the league with areas still developing, Houston is adding a player who already understands how to control an offense, make smart decisions with the basketball, and capitalize on scoring opportunities when they present themselves.
Trading into the opening pick of the second round signals that the Rockets were unwilling to leave Thornton’s availability to chance. Rather than waiting for him to fall, Houston identified its target and went and got him.
Now the focus shifts to Summer League, where Thornton will have his first opportunity to show that the efficient scoring, steady playmaking, and winning habits he displayed at Ohio State can translate to the next level.
