NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley sharply criticized the Houston Rockets in a recent interview

Heading into the upcoming season, expectations are high for the Houston Rockets. But NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley does not share that enthusiasm.

In an interview with Casino Guru’s Kyle Odegard, Barkley delivered a pessimistic assessment of Houston’s outlook, dismissing them from the Western Conference contender conversation entirely.

Barkley explained that the two biggest reasons are the lack of leadership and not having a style of play. Although I think the Rockets will be a top-four team in the West, I can resonate with Barkley’s reasoning.

One aspect I agree with is the concern regarding Durant’s leadership. For example, to preserve his body and manage his fatigue levels, Houston seems set to reduce his playing time this season. However, Durant recently opposed the idea, arguing that the team is better when he is on the court. Durant’s opposing arguments suggest that he does not fully trust his teammates or the management.

Durant has also caused a lot of commotion and rumours on social media. It feels like every week there is something new. For a franchise trying to establish stability, his social media presence is unnerving.

However, I believe that the recent signing of Marcus Smart will have a big impact on the leadership in Houston. Smart has a strong and motivational voice both on and off the court.

The return of Fred VanVleet will also help with the leadership issues. Not only will it give Houston another leader both on and off the court, but it will also help Houston find their style of play.

Barkley was right in some ways, as without a traditional floor general or cohesive offensive system, the Rockets often default to isolated one-on-one play. However, VanVleet looks set to take back his role as the starting point guard and primary ball handler.

Barkley totally disregards the elite defense that Ime Udoka has created. Saying Houston lacks a style of play ignores that. Under head coach Ime Udoka, the Rockets have built a clear, relentless identity around elite physical defense.

The Rockets finished fourth in opponent points per game and sixth in overall defensive rating last season. Driven by disruptive perimeter length from Amen Thompson and Tari Eason, the team thrives on suffocating opposing ball-handlers, forcing turnovers, and dominating the defensive glass.

As training camp opens, the Rockets face an uphill battle to rewrite the narrative. It is obvious that the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder are clear favorites in the West. But the Rockets are in a strong position to prove Barkley wrong and disrupt the Western Conference hierarchy.
