After much anticipation, the Houston Rockets now have one of their first opponents announced for the 2026 -2027 NBA season, which will be the San Antonio Spurs on the road.
Following a first-round exit to conclude the 2025 season, the Houston Rockets are ready to embrace the challenge of the 2026 season and will no doubt be ready to go for opening week.
Speaking of opening week, it has been announced that the Rockets will match up eary in the season on the road against the San Antonio Spurs in Austin, Texas, at the Moody Center on Friday, October 23rd at 9:30 PM EST, and it can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Regardless of who the Rockets wanted to begin the season against, this a great opportunity against the Spurs who are coming off an NBA Finals appearance.
Looking at the stars in this matchup, there is plenty on both sides. The Spurs will be led by Victor Wembanyama, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle, while the Rockets have a few stars of their own in Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, and Alperen Sengun.
To open the season, this is one of the better matchups that NBA fans could ask for as it pairs in-state rivals against each other as they each aim to make their claim as an elite team in a very stacked Western Conference.
For the Rockets, this will be a great test specifically for the front court as Wembenyama is asserting himself as one of the best players in the league right now and has been tough for anyone to stop or score against.
The good news for the Rockets is the fact that they have several different players to throw at Wembenyama, like Sengun, Durant, Jabari Smith Jr., and Steven Adams. Houston also has the benefit of having a coach like Ime Udoka, who is very experienced and can scheme up different ways to get Wembenyama uncomfortable.
The defense against Wembenyama is just one element of this game, as the Rockets also have to defend Tobias Harris in the frontcourt, as well as the variety of solid wing players the Spurs have.
In terms of the perimeter, the Spurs have Harper, Devin Vassell, De'Aaron Fox, Carter Bryant, Keldon Johnson, and Julian Champagnie among other players on a very talented roster.
Now, shifting from just the opening game against the Spurs, it is also interesting to think about what the Rockets' floor and ceiling could be for the 2026 season.
Just thinking about the talent this roster has, the worst they can afford to be is a competitive first-round matchup. Otherwise, there will be some serious questions next offseason if there are no major strides.
On the other hand, the ceiling is something that is hard to know and predict because of how young this roster really is, with players like Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, and Jabari Smith Jr. still developing. However, if they each take a step forward, specifically on the offensive end, that could get this team in a position where they can once again push for a top-four seed and possibly a conference finals appearance.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Rockets could be slightly overlooked due to the stacked competition in the West, but if these Rockets can take down the Spurs on opening night, the rest of the NBA will have no choice but to take this team very seriously.
