Rafael Stone successfully structured contracts for Sengun, Thompson, Durant and Eason while dodging the luxury tax.
Ever since the huge blockbuster trade brought Kevin Durant to Houston, the Rockets have been flirting with the luxury tax line. With all of the young talent on the roster, Rafael Stone has been having to negotiate salaries that keep the roster below the luxury tax line and the first apron line.
Going over the luxury tax line would mean that the franchise has to pay a financial penalty based on every dollar by which the line is exceeded. Even worse, the first apron line triggers heavy penalties. Luckily for the Houston franchise, Stone has been very successful in his negotiations and in keeping Houston unpenalized while flirting with the luxury tax line.
In October 2025, Durant signed a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets. Durant could have had an extension worth around $120 million. With the intent to win a championship, he took a team-friendly $30 million pay cut to give Houston more financial flexibility and opportunity to build a stronger team around him.
Durant’s contract structure allowed Houston to stay under the luxury tax line while being able to afford the contract renewals of the rising stars on the team. Stone was able to get Alperen Sengun, Tari Eason, and now Amen Thompson to sign team-friendly contract extensions while remaining under the luxury tax line.
Sengun signed a five-year, $185 million rookie contract extension with Houston, although he was eligible for a contract worth around $225. His deal was finalized around $40 million less than the maximum and is and will be a foundational piece of the Houston franchise.
Rafael Stone was also able to negotiate a very friendly contract extension with Tari Eason. Eason signed a five-year, $81 million contract, with an average annual value of $16.3 million. Eason’s potential annual salary was projected slightly above $20 million, displaying agin the success of Rafael Stone’s contract negotiations.
Eason’s contract extension includes a low $14.1 million cap for the 2026-27 season. This is incredibly significant, as it allowed Houston to give Amen Thompson his huge contract extension. The Houston Rockets have finalized their negotiations with the 23-year-old Amen Thompson.
On Thursday, September 3, 2026, Thompson signed a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension while staying below the luxury tax and first apron boundaries. The tally of millions of dollars saved between Sengun, Durant, Eason, and Thompson is around a whopping $70 million when compared to the maximum and projected values.
This speaks to Stone’s negotiation skills, and it also speaks to the dedication that the players have to Houston. Will these players’ financial sacrifices prove successful for Houston?
