Pros and Cons of signing Amen Thompson's max extension

Amen Thompson is currently entering his fourth and final season with the Houston Rockets. Proving that he is truly an elite prospect, Houston will be faced with the decision of whether or not they should offer him a lucrative max contract extension, estimated to be $251 million over 5 years.

Amen Thompson has proven to be an elite defender: his strongest attributes are his versatility, size, and athleticism. At 6”7, he is able to guard multiple positions and players, from point guard to small forward. The Rockets have placed an enormous amount of faith in him, as he is tasked with the responsibility to defend the opponents’ primary playmaker on a game to game basis. No matter how difficult the matchup, he continues to play lockdown defense and subdue the opponents’ offensive prowess.

His defensive talents were rewarded as he made the NBA All-Defense First Team as a sophomore in 2025, and  finished 8th in Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 37.4 minutes per game, in which he averaged 1.5 steals, 0.6 blocks, and 7.8 rebounds with a 113.5 defensive rating.

Although his defensive is undeniably top-tier, his offensive talent remains in question. He did show improvement this year, and finished the season averaging 18.3 points per game. The biggest worry is his three point shooting, which has been abysmal to say the least. In 79 games this season, he took 116 shots from deep, and only made 25 (21.6%). Considering that this is only his third season and he is only 23 years old, there is still potential and hope for him to improve his three-point shooting and truly solidify himself as an elite 2-way player.

Another big issue regarding his contract, is the amount of expensive players on the team. Houston had issues with squad depth, which played a big role in the early exit in the playoffs. Offering him the max contract extension will only reduce the flexibility and depth of the roster. However, considering the high draft pick that they used to get him, and reports that the management is highly committed to him, it is expected that they will offer him the contract extension.

Houston will likely try to negotiate a cheaper contract with him, but if he signs it will be a huge investment. Will the risk reap the rewards?
