With wing depth depleted following recent departures, Houston must pivot to the remaining market. High-upside targets like Jonathan Kuminga and Ziaire Williams could bolster the roster.
Following the Houston Rockets’ most recent transaction, it’s safe to say they need to be on the lookout for another wing player. Dorian Finney-Smith didn’t contribute much at all last season, and now he’s gone for good.
Considering they also lost Josh Okogie to free agency, as discussed on Roundtable, the Rockets are running sort of thin in that area.
Unfortunately there had to be multiple second round picks attached to the DFS contract, per Roundtable. That means the Rockets only have one more second round pick left to trade, and will be better off signing a free agent of their own.
With most players off the board within the first week of free agency, Jonathan Kuminga is the best forward for Houston to go after.
By all accounts he wants a bigger role, but that doesn’t seem to be a likely outcome. Even if he returns to the Atlanta Hawks, he’d be a sixth man, at best.
Trendon Watford, however, will likely not be returning to the Philadelphia 76ers. He’s never been a great shooter, but is just an all-around good player. Sort of like a more athletic Kyle Anderson.
Another guy to look at would be Ziaire Williams, whose team option was declined by the Brooklyn Nets. He’s a former lottery pick and still only 24 years old, so a team will surely take their chances with him.
If Rafael Stone and the Rockets’ front office don’t act fast, I’m worried that Jeff Green and Jae’Sean Tate will be the only other signings.
