The Houston Rockets appear to be in a good spot when it comes to the future based on the latest projection.
The Houston Rockets definitely have the pieces to have a great showing during the 2026 season, but the Rockets could also be set up for great long-term success.
On that note, NBA insiders recently put together a projection on ESPN that projects each team's future and ranks them 1-30. In that projection, the Rockets ranked No. 4, which bodes well for Houston as they aim to be a team that can win consistently.
When looking at the young talent on this Rockets team, they have plenty, as it includes Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, and rookie guard Bruce Thornton.
Moving forward, the Rockets have plenty of young players who can thrive, and the most interesting part about it is arguably the fact that they have young players at every position, which bodes very well for sustained success.
Now, when it comes to the Rockets, there is one question that needs to be answered, and in the future projections piece, NBA insider Bobby Marks alluded to it. That question is what veteran small forward Kevin Durant will do with his $48 million player option that kicks in next season.
Looking at this situation with Durant, it will be very interesting as the Rockets just signed Amen Thompson to a massive extension, which will no doubt have an impact on what Durant decides to do. Also, with the minimal success that Houston has had in the postseason, it is worth wondering how that may affect Durant if the Rockets do not take a step forward in the playoffs.
While the situation with Durant is something to think about, Durant is 38 years old so he is not necessarily someone who is a major part of the Rockets' long term plans, he could help Houston capitalize in the short term if the young core can continue to progress.
When it comes to the Rockets' overall rating in the future power rankings, they graded fairly well across the board, which is why they were ranked No. 4.
In the rankings, the Rockets received a rating of 69 for players (No. 9), 63 for management which is coaching staff and front office (No. 13), 83 for draft which is future draft assets (No. 6), 57 for money which is a team's spending habits and cap situation (No. 13), and 69 for market which is the reputation of the city and franchise (No. 8).
After looking at this rating, it seems pretty clear that the Rockets consistently put themselves in positions to be successful across the board, but in particular, they do a great job of preparing for the future and having a plan for the future.
In terms of the teams above the Rockets in these rankings, it is just the Oklahoma City Thunder at No. 1, the San Antonio Spurs at No. 2, and the Boston Celtics at No. 3. With that said, the Rockets have put themselves in great company moving forward.
So, as the Rockets head into the 2026 season, it will be interesting to monitor the performance and progression of the young players, the overall team success, and where Durant is at to see what that could mean for Houston in 2027 and beyond.
