With Fred VanVleet’s timeline diverging from Houston’s young core, the franchise must decide if Reed Sheppard or Amen Thompson can evolve into the championship-caliber floor general.

Summer is here and so is the time for the Rockets to make the decision that’s been on the top of everyone’s minds for a year now. And it has nothing to do with stars, trades, or blockbuster moves. It’s whether Houston actually has its long-term answer at point guard yet.

Fred VanVleet missed the entire 2025-26 season, which only made that conversation louder. No one is questioning whether he adds value. He did all year from the bench. The bigger question here is timeline.

VanVleet is older than the core Houston is building around, and while the Rockets clearly missed his leadership, composure, and ability to settle the offense down, they still don’t seem to have a long-term succession plan behind him- or at least not one they’ve shared publicly. So, who do they want fully organizing the offense once this group reaches its peak?

Reed Sheppard showed promise this season, but it's not exactly clear what his long-term offensive role will ultimately look like. Amen Thompson naturally creates offense as more of a point-forward than a traditional floor general, leaving Houston in an interesting spot entering the summer.

Even if VanVleet stays another season, Houston still needs to figure out who eventually becomes the offensive organizer this roster was obviously missing this season.

None of this means the Rockets need to panic and force some massive point guard move immediately. VanVleet still brings real value to a young roster trying to contend around Kevin Durant.

Maybe VanVleet stays put, and Houston dodges the problem another season or two. But eventually, the Rockets need more than talent. They need a long-term offensive identity, and right now, that part of the roster still feels unfinished.
