Taking a look at the top takeaways for the Houston Rockets following their last-second win against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.
The Houston Rockets were able to once again come out on top as they defeated the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, by a score of 114-110 to improve to 2-0 while the Spurs dropped to 0-2.
With that said, a lot of great things happened in this game, so let's take a look a look at the top takeaways from the Rockets' last-second win over the Spurs.
Amen Thompson Seals the Game
Starting off, guard Amen Thompson had a very impressive game overall in addition to sealing the game on a major play in the final seconds.
On one of the final possessions of the game, the Spurs were down two points, and they gave the ball to their star Victor Wembanyama with the hope that he could tie up the game, but Thompson, standing at 6-7, had other plans as he stuffed the 7-4 Wembanyama and gave the Rockets the ability to clinch the game with free throws.
With this kind of play, Thompson showed his ability to deliver on defense when the Rockets absolutely needed a stop, and while Thompson was at a size disadvantage he proved that he could still get a stop and moving forward if he can continue to make plays like this on defense he may be due for another selection to the All-Defense team.
Great Aggressiveness on Offense From Alperen Sengun
Next is the fact that center Alperen Sengun showed a ton of aggressiveness on the offensive end. For the game, Sengun finished with 29 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and one block, and in terms of shooting, Sengun shot 10/20 from the field, 2/4 from beyond the arc, and 7/8 from the free-throw line, which was a solid stat line.
What really catches the eye is the fact that Sengun took 20 shots and constantly attacked the Spurs on the interior, regardless of who was defending the rim. Additionally, Sengun was willing to take perimeter shots, knock them down, and be consistent on his free throws.
Overall this was a great game from Sengun and with him willing to be aggressive attacking the rim and taking what the defense gave him on the perimeter, the Rockets could very well have multiple options they can lean on in tight games over the course of 2026 which could help this team to make a major push in the Western Conference.
Fred VanVleet Plays Clean Again
Another takeaway on the offensive end is the fact that guard Fred VanVleet was able to play cleanly yet again. Throughout this game, VanVleet was solid as he tallied 14 points, three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and zero turnovers.
The most important stat line was the zero turnovers from VanVleet as through two games he has been able to play clean which is huge because he has been able to help this Houston offense to run a lot more effectively and efficiently and it has really shown with the Rockets starting 2-0.
So, as Houston continues to move forward throughout the season, if VanVleet continues to play clean and the rest of the lineup keeps on progressing, this Rockets offense has the potential to be one of the best in the entire NBA.
Kevin Durant Does a Little Bit of Everything
The final takeaway on this list is that forward Kevin Durant was able to a little bit of everything as he had a strong performance in the same place where he played in college.
During this game, Durant recorded 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and was solid when it came to shooting as he went 5/10 from the field, 2/2 from three, and 8/8 from the free-throw line. Looking at Durant's performance, it is clear that he was not worried about forcing the issue, but instead he let the game come to him which led to him playing well, but he was also able to get other players going on offense as well.
With the performance that Durant on Friday night, if he can continue to play like that in terms of being aggressive when he needs to and making plays for others, this Rockets has the ability to be very dangerous and very dynamic moving forward.
