With newfound depth at the point guard position, Thornton might struggle to see minutes on the court.

As the Houston Rockets head into the 2026–27 NBA regular season, head coach Ime Udoka will have to face a luxurious problem, as the roster has a deep, high-IQ backcourt rotation after signing multiple guards during this summer's offseason.

Fred VanVleet is firmly entrenched as the starting point guard, but he will be rested on back-to-backs due to the fact that he is returning from a severe ACL tear last season. This poses the question of how Udoka will manage the offense when VanVleet rests, and what role rookie Bruce Thornton will have after an impressive start to his career.

Marcus Smart will likely take the role of the starting point guard whenever VanVleet rests. But since the other guards, Bogdanovic and Sheppard, are not true point guards, I would not be surprised to see Thornton get around 10 minutes per game. However, I do not expect Thornton to get many, if any, minutes at all when VanVleet is healthy and starting.

Rookie guard Bruce Thornton maximized his limited opportunities to impress during the Houston Rockets' 2026 preseason, showing elite scoring efficiency in short bursts. Across three appearances, the Ohio State product averaged 12.3 minutes per game, flashing the dynamic poise that previously highlighted his Summer League campaign.

Thornton made an immediate statement in the October 9 opener against Dallas, exploding for 13 points in just nine minutes of action. He followed that up with a steady nine-point performance over 18 minutes in the second matchup against the Mavericks, before concluding his slate with a five-point outing against Oklahoma City.

Though a crowded veteran backcourt features Fred VanVleet, Marcus Smart, and Reed Sheppard, Thornton's preseason showcase proved his NBA readiness. His ability to score efficiently off the bench gives coach Ime Udoka a reliable, high-upside depth piece as the Rockets target a top Western Conference seed.

With this being said, early minutes for Thornton will be found primarily as a developmental centerpiece for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League. While Thornton has the talent of an NBA-caliber guard, Houston's win-now depth means that it will likely take an extended period of time before Thornton earns valuable minutes in a Rockets jersey.

If he can continue to perform at a high level, he can find his way into a more prominent role by mid or late season. How important of a role can Thornton carve for himself this season?
