For the second time this season, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks. Unlike in their first win, Victor Wembanyama offered an all-time performance, pushing the Spurs on top.
On Wednesday night, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks, winning 112-111. The victory is the Spurs' second over the Mavericks this season, and their sixth in a row.
In their first win over the Mavs, Victor Wembanyama was stellar, offering 23 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. On Wednesday, he posted 52 points, 24 rebounds, and eight rejections, somehow doubling his output from the first game. The 52 points mark a career-high for the superstar.
Lost behind Wembanyama's spectacular game was Dylan Harper's solid outing. The sophomore finished with 21 points of his own, getting to the rim with ease and shooting 7-for-10 from the paint. So far this season, he's the most effective rim finisher in the entire league, and in the win, he outplayed his draft classmate.
Wemby Puts Spurs On His Back In Win
The main headline surrounding this game--as expected--is Wembanyama. Beyond just Harper, though, the secondary stars had solid games for both teams.
Kyrie Irving, in his first game against the Spurs in two seasons, offered a vintage performance. The veteran guard finished with 29 points and five assists, putting the Mavericks on his back more than once and keeping them in the game. If Irving had some support all game long instead of just in the fourth, the Mavericks might have been able to upset San Antonio.
In the first game between these two teams, Cooper Flagg didn't play. He is one of the better players in the NBA, but the Spurs weren't worried about him at all.
"I don't think it really matters who's on there," Stephon Castle said before the game. "I don't think it really matters who's on the other side of the court. I think it's really us."
The confidence, it seems, was founded. Flagg finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-19 shooting. Over five games against the Spurs, Flagg is only shooting 44 percent from the floor, compared to 47 percent over his career.
The Mavericks were able to keep it close, battling back from down 19 points in the third quarter and taking a brief lead in the fourth quarter. Dallas is certainly ahead of schedule and should be one of the better teams in the Western Conference, and looked the part on Wednesday, for the most part, at least.
With nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama appeared to tweak his ankle, although he remained on the floor. San Antonio will not have two days in a row of rest until December, so keeping an eye on everyone's health and durability will need to be a top priority.
The Spurs will next play the Sacramento Kings on Friday, kicking off their NBA Cup action.
