The San Antonio Spurs are playing an unselfish brand of basketball, and no one demonstrates that better than Devin Vassell.
If you look just at Devin Vassell's stats while with the San Antonio Spurs, you might be able to convince yourself that he's on the decline. He's only 26 years old, although statistically, his most impactful seasons are behind him.
His best scoring mark was in 2024, as was his highest rebound and assist count. His 3-point shooting has remained solid, although it peaked in 2023. He's remained in the starting lineup, although his box score impact has decreased in recent seasons.
That's all very intentioal, and as long as the Spurs are winning, Vassell doesn't mind.

Devin Vassell Enjoys the Back Seat
There are still some games where Vassell is the leading scorer and shot-taker, although behind Victor Wembanyama, Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, and De'Aaron Fox, he is far from the first option.
Keldon Johnson gets a lot of credit for taking a back seat, moving from the starting lineup to the bench, and then eventually winning Sixth Man of the Year, but Vassell has undergone a pretty similar journey.
Even with worse stats, though, it's clear he's much-imporved from earlier seasons.
"Not limiting myself to just one thing," is what he credits his success with. "I think for the longest it was offense. When I came in trying to develop my offensive end, people were like, 'I want to see him get back to that defensive mentality.' I think that helped me out a lot last year, just focusing on back on the defensive end, going through the playoffs, understanding intensity, understanding at the end of the day it's all about winning. So if I don't score 20 points and we win, what am I mad about? So I just try to figure out exactly what I need to do for the team to win. And I think that was blocking shots, getting rebounds, being physical, talking, whatever the case may be. And then carrying that over into now."
Last season was the first time in his career he's made the postseason, and he played a key role in getting the Spurs to the Finals for the first time since 2014.
Looking ahead, Vassell knows that making it back to the Finals is not a given, although with the "team-first" mindset and with a roster full of players who put the collective ahead of the individual, it seems that the Spurs have solid odds.
