San Antonio is ranked No. 2 in ESPN's offseason power rankings. Victor Wembanyama's $252 million extension and a 62-win season anchor the ranking.
San Antonio stayed at No. 2 in ESPN's offseason power rankings, unchanged from where the panel placed the Spurs after the Finals.
Wright wrote that San Antonio decided to run back virtually the same roster that reached the Finals, and that Victor Wembanyama gave the organization a discount on what should have been a supermax extension. Tobias Harris was the Spurs' only notable addition this offseason without losing any key names.
Wembanyama signed for five years and $252 million on July 10. It is the third-largest rookie extension in league history. Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt, chief executive officer RC Buford, general manager Brian Wright, and coach Mitch Johnson flew to Wembanyama's home in France for the signing.
He won Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the youngest winner in league history and the first unanimous one since the award began in 1982-83. He made All-NBA first team and finished third in MVP voting. Over 64 regular-season games he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, and led the league with 3.1 blocks in 29.2 minutes.
San Antonio won 62 games. The Spurs beat Portland in the first round, eliminated the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, and reached the franchise's first Finals since 2014. New York won the series in five games.
Stephon Castle set career highs across the board in his second season at 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists, shooting 47.1% from the field. He won Rookie of the Year the year before after going fourth overall in 2024.
Dylan Harper, the second pick in 2025, averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 22.6 minutes before the postseason. He shot 51.5% from the field through the playoff run and scored 14.1 points a game in 26.8 minutes.
Harris signed a two-year deal worth $30.8 million. He spent last season in Detroit.
The rest of the payroll is committed. De'Aaron Fox will earn $49.5 million in 2026-27 at the start of a four-year maximum extension, making him the highest-paid player on the roster until Wembanyama's deal kicks in. Devin Vassell is owed $80 million over three seasons and Julian Champagnie $45 million over three. Keldon Johnson makes $18 million before reaching unrestricted free agency.
San Antonio also re-signed Harrison Barnes, Champagnie, and Jordan McLaughlin, and drafted Jayden Quaintance twentieth and Tarris Reed Jr. twenty-sixth.
Castle and Harper are each eligible for rookie extensions over the next two summers.
