If the San Antonio Spurs are going to trade De'Aaron Fox, picking up an all-time great point guard wouldn't be a bad return.
The San Antonio Spurs are not looking for an upgrade at point guard, but if the chance to land Stephen Curry were to present itself, they'd be foolish not to make an offer.
Last season, at 37 years old, Curry averaged 26.6 points and shot 39.3 percent from 3-point range. He is still a blisteringly effective scorer and the best shooter in the NBA. All signs point to him wanting to finish out his career with the Golden State Warriors, but with their title window firmly shut, he might demand a change of scenery.
One former player thinks San Antonio is the ideal landing spot for him.
Stephen Jackson Outlines Curry Mock Trade
Stephen Jackson played parts of four seasons with the Spurs, winning a ring in 2003. However, he's since soured on the organization, going out of his way to criticize Tony Parker and Gregg Popovich.
Still, he wants to see Curry end his career on a winning team, and he thinks the Spurs are the perfect landing spot.
"You got De'Aaron Fox," Jackson said on his podcast. "I ain't even talking about Harper or Castle. They got two big draft picks this year. The big from Connecticut, so they did well in the draft. So they got the pieces to move for Steph with De'Aaron Fox. I think that would be great."
Jackson would see the Spurs flip Fox and one of their first-round draft picks, plus some other draft assets, to Golden State for Curry. That would keep Dylan Harper off the bench, not sacrifice any depth, and free the Spurs from any financial shackles.
Fox is under contract for the next four seasons. In 2027, Stephon Castle will be eligible for an extension. Harper will be eligible in the summer after that. With Fox owed $222 million, the Spurs can't afford to keep their young trio in place, so moving on from the veteran is inevitable.
Curry will be a free agent next summer, but is eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million contract extension. Even if he were to sign that deal with the Warriors before being traded, his salary would be off the books by the time Harper is ready to sign his new cotnract.
Adding Curry is not a long-term investment for the Spurs. The plan would be to enjoy him for two seasons and then hand the offense fully to Harper and Castle. Plus, a year or two of Curry would make the Spurs the most dangerous team in the NBA.
