As Victor Wembanyama dominates the postseason, a Celtics legend argues the Spurs sensation already surpasses icons like Michael Jordan and LeBron James to redefine the ceiling of basketball greatness.

The hype surrounding Victor Wembanyama has never really slowed down since he arrived in San Antonio, but now one former NBA legend is taking the conversation to another level entirely.

After another dominant postseason performance from the Spurs superstar, former Celtics great Paul Pierce made an eye-opening statement that immediately caught the attention of basketball fans everywhere.

"He is the most complete player we’ve ever seen play the game," Pierce said on a recent episode of his podcast. "Like, we can talk about Bron, Jordan, Joker but he is the most complete player in the history of the game."

That kind of praise would normally sound exaggerated for a player still so early in his career. But the scary part for the rest of the NBA is that Wemby keeps producing performances that make those conversations feel less ridiculous every day.

The 22-year-old has already transformed the Spurs from a rebuilding franchise into a legitimate playoff threat. He became the NBA’s first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year this season while continuing to expand his offensive game into territory never before seen from someone his size.

Against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals, Wembanyama has looked every bit like the centerpiece of the NBA’s next era. He opened the series by recording a historic 12-block performance and followed it up with multiple takeover moments on both ends of the floor.

Then came Game 5.

After being ejected in the previous game, Wembanyama responded exactly how franchise superstars are expected to respond. He dominated with 27 points and 17 rebounds while leading San Antonio to a blowout win and a 3-2 series lead.

That response may have been the biggest reason Pierce felt comfortable making such a bold declaration. The physical tools have always been obvious, but Wembanyama’s poise, maturity, and ability to impact every aspect of the game continue separating him from nearly every young player the league has ever seen.

At this point, the conversation around the Spurs centerpiece is no longer just about future potential. Around the NBA, there’s growing belief that the Spurs already have a player capable of defining the league for the next decade — and maybe even changing the way basketball greatness is viewed altogether.

And he is only 22 years old.
