NBA Analyst Reveals if Spurs Are in Good Spot to Trade for Disgruntled Star cover image

The San Antonio Spurs didn't make a big trade this offseason, but could they make one in the future?

The San Antonio Spurs made a blockbuster trade last season, acquiring De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings.

Many NBA pundits and fans thought the Spurs would be aggressive this offseason and acquire another star for Victor Wembanyama, but it didn't happen.

The good news is that San Antonio is in a good spot for trade for a disgruntled star this season.

"The good news is that the Spurs have the tools to acquire what they lack," Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report wrote. "They can trade their even-year first-rounders through 2032 and own several swaps with the Atlanta Hawks.

"Add to that the expiring salaries of Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan and Kelly Olynyk that total $40 million, and San Antonio can put together a compelling offer for the next star who wants to team up with Wemby."

San Antonio plays in the rugged Western Conference, so despite having Wembanyama, it won't be easy for the team to make the playoffs this season.

Wembanyama has career averages of 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.7 blocks. He has led the NBA in blocks per game and total blocks for two consecutive seasons. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Wembanyama wins multiple Defensive Player of the Year Awards during his career.

However, the Spurs may need another "superstar" next to Wembanyama to be a title contender, maybe someone like Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

"Once LeBron (James), Steph (Curry) and KD (Kevin Durant) retire, Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) is going to become the face of the NBA and dominate the league for the next 10 to 15 years," an NBA executive told Roundtable. "I think he's going to win multiple MVPs and Defensive Player of the Year Awards.

"I also heard that the Spurs are saving all of their trade assets for Giannis. If they get Giannis next to Wemby, you are looking at the next NBA dynasty."

Fox will miss the start of this season with a hamstring injury, so Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and rookie Dylan Harper will have to carry the offensive load.

Wembanyama got taller and stronger this offseason, so he's primed for a huge season.
