As the San Antonio Spurs grapple with a crushing NBA Finals loss, rumors and mock trades have already begun to heat up.
Just two days after the San Antonio Spurs suffered a crushing defeat in the NBA Finals, the cogs of the offseason machine have already begun turning.
The Spurs have a busy summer ahead of them. Victor Wembanyama is extension-eligible, as is Julian Champagnie, and they have the 20th pick in the upcoming Draft. On top of that, Kelly Olynyk and Harrison Barnes will be unrestricted free agents.
The hottest story so far is how the Spurs plan to proceed with De'Aaron Fox. He just had an All-Star season, although he was a non-factor in the Finals. Fans are calling for him to be traded, and while we shouldn't expect it quite yet, he will be shipped out sooner rather than later.
One mock trade brings in less talent, but adresses a key need for the Silver and Black.
Spurs Land Andrew Wiggins in Mock Trade
The Miami Heat have been linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo, but if the Greek Freak is made available, expect the vast majority of the NBA to make a serious bid. While the Heat can assemble a decent trade package, odds are they'll be outbid.
If that ends up being the case, Miami could turn to the Spurs to complete its roster. Fox and Bam Adebayo were teammates in college at Kentucky, and a reunion is long overdue. The Spurs, meanwhile, need a ready-to-play forward to round out the frontcourt next to Victor Wembanyama.
FanSided's Christopher Kline proposed a simple trade: Fox for Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell.
With Fox, the Heat get the point guard they've long missed and can move Tyler Herro back to off-ball. In return, the Spurs get Andrew Wiggins and can either extend him or let him walk in 2027, giving them ultimate financial flexibility and the assurance that they can sign everyone in the young core to long-term deals.
Next season, Wiggins would provide shooting, defense, and rebounding, especially while Wembanyama roams outside of the paint. All postseason long, the Spurs gave up more than their fair share of second-chance points. Wiggins would mitigate that.
While fans shouldn't expect a trade this summer, the February 2027 deadline seems like a reasonable time for the Spurs to make a splash. If Fox continues to underperform, don't expect San Antonio to get a massive haul back, but a win-now player like Wiggins who fills a position of need isn't a bad return.
Plus, in the weaker Eastern Conference, the Heat are going to try to compete, no matter what. Fox could be their missing piece.
