As the San Antonio Spurs search for a star forward to pair with Victor Wembanyama, one name keeps coming up, and the Spurs have been linked to him for the past several offseasons.

The San Antonio Spurs are not expected to make a splashy, blockbuster move this offseason, but that doesn't mean Brian Wright and the front office can take the summer off.

The Spurs will pick 20th in the NBA Draft, need to re-sign Julian Champagnie, and are expected to target a frontcourt partner to pair with Victor Wembanyama. Names like PJ Washington, Yaxel Lendeborg, and John Collins have been floated.

While adding any of those players would be key to the Spurs' success, none of those would be billed as blockbuster, league-altering signings, draft picks, or trades. However, as the rumor mill whirrs away, there's one name the Spurs can't escape being connected with.

Spurs Are Still Linked to Kawhi Leonard

Every offseason, fans, experts, and bloggers pin the Spurs as the ideal landing spot for Kawhi Leonard. On paper, it makes sense: he provides the 3-and-D presence the Spurs need, he has a winning pedigree, and he likes to fly under the radar, much like the Spurs' organization does.

However, Leonard and the Spurs have a messy past, with The Klaw forcing his way out in 2018. Fans are yet to get over it, and Leonard seems content in California.

However, as the Los Angeles Clippers rebuild around Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin, Leonard's age and injury history point to him being moved. ClutchPoints' Jedd Pagaduan was the first to link Leonard to the Spurs this summer, although the rumor has been floating for years.

Last season, Leonard made his seventh All-NBA Team, taking his offense to the next level with a career-high 27.9 points per game in 65 appearances. He is a solid shooter, one of the best defenders in the NBA, and would fit perfectly on the wing in the Spurs' starting five.

Even with his injury history, the fit is apparent, as Julian Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, or even Carter Bryant could make the occasional start while Leonard sits out.

On the court, there's really not a better trade target for the Spurs this summer, no matter the cost. Off the court, we're not sure if the wounds will ever heal, and the fanbase and franchise might never welcome him back with open arms.

Even if Leonard doesn't come to San Antonio this summer, expect the exact same rumors and speculation to circulate in 2027. There's no escape!
