Tim Duncan and David Robinson secure elite status in a new all-time ranking, cementing San Antonio’s legacy as a defensive powerhouse anchored by these legendary "Twin Towers."
The San Antonio Spurs have long been known as one of the NBA's premier defensive franchises, and a new all-time ranking from Bleacher Report only reinforces that legacy.
In its list of the greatest defenders in NBA history, Tim Duncan earned the No. 2 spot, while fellow Spurs legend David Robinson came in at No. 11, giving San Antonio two representatives among the game's elite defensive icons.
(Oh, and Victor Wembanyama came in at No. 36, so maybe that's three icons!)
Seeing Duncan near the top of the list comes as little surprise. Throughout his 19-year career, "The Big Fundamental" built his Hall of Fame résumé on consistency, discipline, and elite positioning rather than flashy highlight plays. While he never captured the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, Duncan was selected to an NBA-record 15 All-Defensive Teams and served as the backbone of nearly two decades of dominant Spurs defenses.
During his career, San Antonio routinely finished among the league's best defensive teams, a testament to the impact Duncan made every night.
Bleacher Report placed only Bill Russell ahead of Duncan, highlighting just how highly the Spurs legend is regarded among basketball's greatest defensive players. The ranking recognizes that Duncan's ability to anchor a defense for nearly two decades was unmatched by almost anyone who has ever played the game.
Robinson's placement at No. 11 is equally deserving. Before Duncan arrived in San Antonio, "The Admiral" had already established himself as one of the NBA's most intimidating rim protectors.
His rare combination of size, speed and athleticism allowed him to erase shots, guard multiple positions and dominate the paint in ways few centers ever have.
A former Defensive Player of the Year, Robinson led the NBA in defensive win shares three times and was the centerpiece of Spurs teams that consistently ranked among the league's stingiest defenses. His ability to protect the rim while covering ground like a smaller player made him one of the most unique defensive talents in NBA history.
And he did all of that while also being an elite scorer and even leading the league in points per game in the 1993-94 season.
Of course, Spurs fans were fortunate enough to watch both legends share the floor during the franchise's "Twin Towers" era. Duncan and Robinson combined to deliver the organization's first two NBA championships in 1999 and 2003 while establishing a defensive identity that became the standard in San Antonio for years to come.
