The San Antonio Spurs selected Kentucky forward Jayden Quaintance with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but the rookie missed all of Summer League and underwent major surgery on his knee.
The San Antonio Spurs have supreme faith that Jaydern Quaintance will one day be an impact player. The power forward spent his second and final college season at Kentucky, but only played in four games before injuries ended his campaign.
Heading into the NCAA season, Quaintance was expected to be a lottery pick, perhaps even go in the top ten. He is an elite defender and physical interior player with elite athleticism. However, injuries derailed his draft stock, and the Spurs took a flier on him, nabbing him 20th overall.
In 28 games split between Kentucky and Arizona State, Quaintance battled injuries and averaged 8.8 points and 7.5 rebounds. He missed all of Summer League, and his possible NBA debut has been pushed back.
Spurs' Rookie Jayden Quaintance Undergoes Surgery
After tearing both his ACL and meniscus while in college, Quaintance is a shell of the player he once was. He's facing a lengthy recovery, although after an offseason knee surgery, the Spurs are hopeful that he can pick up where he left off.
"Jayden Quaintance underwent successful surgery on his right knee," the Spurs published in an official media update. "The team will provide updates as appropriate."
As draft picks Tarris Reed, Maliq Brown, and Ja'Kobi Gillespie lit up the Summer League, Quaintance watched from the bench. There was initially hope that he could make his NBA debut alongside the rest of the rookies in the fall, but that timeline has been pushed back.
"Multiple teams that evaluated Quaintance before the draft anticipated he would need a surgery that could hold him out for most of his rookie season, league sources told The Athletic," reported Jared Weiss. "However, one of those sources said Quaintance looked fantastic in his 1-on-0 workout, even if he could not fully extend his injured right leg."
In recent years, first-round draft picks DaRon Holmes, Nikola Topic, Michael Porter Jr., and Chet Holmgren all missed their entire rookie seasons. Topic and Holmes are still looking to find their footing, but Holmgren and Porter are both excellent NBA players..
The Spurs ar ehoping Quaintance will fall into the second camp.
Before the draft, the Spurs knew that injuries would be a concern, but the payoff should be worth the wait. As surgeries pile up and his debut gets pushed back, fans can't help but worry that he will quickly be passed by players who are available. It's the most important trait among NBA players.
