The San Antonio Spurs appear to be inching closer and closer to their first postseason appearance since 2019, but perhaps we should dial down the hype train just a bit.
Yes, the Spurs boast one of the NBA's most impressive young rosters. Victor Wembanyama is an unquestioned stud, Stephon Castle is the reigning Rookie of the Year and incoming first-year guard Dylan Harper has star potential. That's not even mentioning some of the other tantalizing young talents San Antonio has on its squad.
However, Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes threw some cold water on the possibility of a major step forward from the Spurs this year, specifically questioning just how much Castle and Harper will produce.
"Wemby will ensure San Antonio has a trustworthy defense whenever he's on the floor, which has been the case since he entered the league. De'Aaron Fox, a former All-Star still in his prime, is probably the best teammate Wemby has ever had," Hughes wrote. "At the same time, the Spurs are going to rely on young, mistake-prone, shaky-shooting guards in major roles. Stephon Castle and rookie Dylan Harper are unlikely to rate as positive contributors this early in their careers."
The fact that both Castle and Harper are shaky shooters is more of a reason why the Fox acquisition — and subsequent extension — was very puzzling, considering Fox himself is not exactly the best three-point threat around.
San Antonio will have to see whether or not its intriguing guard trio actually fits. If not, the Spurs may have to make a significant move somewhere, whether that involves trading Fox and his max contract or potentially re-homing Castle, who has star potential.
Hughes did predict San Antonio to finish above .500 during the 2025-26 campaign, projecting a 42-40 record for the Spurs. He also isn't entirely ruling out 50 wins, but he feels that would take a Herculean effort on Wembanyama's part, and San Antonio may not be prepared to fully unleash him just yet. Not after the 21-year-old missed the back half of last season due to a blood clot.
All things considered, the Spurs probably are still another year away from truly contending, but there is no doubt that they are flush with talent and could become quite a force relatively soon.
