The San Antonio Spurs have been linked to Stephen Curry in a mock trade, and while adding the greatest shooter of all time makes sense, it doesn't work in this proposed deal.
There are 4,248 reasons why the San Antonio Spurs should be interested in trading for Stephen Curry. He's made more 3-pointers than anyone else, has four rings, and has enough gas left in the tank for the Spurs to be competitive with him as a core piece.
On top of that, the Spurs can swap De'Aaron Fox's contract, balance the books, and then sweeten the pot with a war chest of draft picks, or even a solid young player like Keldon Johnson or Devin Vassell.
Some players, however, are untouchable, even for a superstar of Curry's caliber.
Why Spurs Won't Trade Dylan Harper
Will Dylan Harper ever be as good as Stephen Curry? Considering that the veteran is undoubtedly one of the ten best players to ever step on an NBA court, probably not. Will Harper ever be as good as Curry is now? Even that might be a stretch, although it's much more realistic.
Heavy's Sai Mohan suggested a trade that would land the Spurs Curry in exchange for Fox, Harper, and two first-round draft picks in 2028. Landing Curry would make the Spurs runaway favorites, although it goes against the very thing the Spurs are trying to build with Wembanyama.
San Antonio, of course, is interested in winning as many titles as possible, as soon as possible. Curry would certainly speed up their timeline and give them even more advantages in the Western Conference. However, moving Harper for Curry doesn't address the Spurs' main goal: win as many titles as possible.
Curry is 38 years old. He doesn't have a ton of gas left in the tank, and even if we assume that he has two excellent seasons left, once that window is closed, it's closed.
Harper, on the other hand, hasn't even begun to peak. When he hits his stride, alongside Stephon Castle, the Spurs are expected to boast one of the best backcourts in the NBA, and should for a very long time.
The primary mission in San Antonio isn't to win the 2027 title. Sure, they're focused on that, but they aim to win in 2028, 2029, and into the 2030s. Giving up one of your brightest young pieces for one of the oldest players in the game isn't conducive to those long-term goals.
Include almost anyone else on the roster in a trade for Curry, but Harper should be considered one of the most untouchable players in the entire league.
