San Antonio Spurs Now Own NBA's Two Most Valuable Assets cover image

The San Antonio Spurs have the most untouchable player in the NBA in Victor Wembanyama, but a recent trade ensures that another one of their assets is increasing in value.

Since 2023, the San Antonio Spurs have boasted the best asset in the NBA: Victor Wembanyama.

Touted as a generational player with GOAT potential, Wemby has lived up to the hype and is quickly establishing himself as the most dominant two-way player ever, all while battling injuries.

When the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic away last season, the term "untouchable" got tossed around, and only a handful of players truly meet the criteria. Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jalen Brunson all fall into that camp, but their "untouchableness" pales in comparison to Wembanyama's.

In addition to Wemby, the Spurs suddenly have one of the other best assets in the league, and this one could be used as a trade chip.

Spurs Boast Two Elite Assets

After the Atlanta Hawks traded Trae Young to the Washington Wizards, the Hawks are in a place of uncertainty. Long term, Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels are the fixtures, but will the currently ninth-place Hawks really be able to weather the season without an All-Star point guard?

In the long term, moving on from Young was probably a good call, but the Hawks should get worse before they get better. Luckily, Atlanta owns the New Orleans Pelicans' 2026 first-round pick. The Spurs, meanwhile, own the Hawks' selection.

After Young was traded away, it's very easy to see the Spurs land a top-ten pick in the 2026 draft. Do they really need another young, unproven player? Or could they flip the pick to a rebuilding team for a win-now player?

New Orleans' Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III stand out, as does Lauri Markkanen from Utah.

Is the Hawks' pick the best asset in the 2026 draft? No, but it's impossible to imagine the Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers, or Sacramento Kings trading their pick. All of the league's bottom-feeders are hoping that the 2026 draft will land them an elite young talent. After checking in with the Spurs, Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper are all on the way to being stars. At this point, the Spurs need to add established players to the core and go all-in on further opening the title window.

Wembanyama is the most untouchable asset in the league. Luckily, the Spurs have some stuff they can play with.
