The San Antonio Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night in a close contest, winning 126-123. It was the first time all season the Spurs beat Minnesota, who still holds a 2-1 season series lead over the Spurs.
San Antonio enjoyed excellent outings from De'Aaron Fox (25 points, 12 assists), Keldon Johnson (20 points, iced the game with a 3-pointer), and, of course, Victor Wembanyama, who led the team with a 39-point masterclass.
Initially listed as questionable with an ankle injury, Anthony Edwards looked like the best version of himself, going off for 55 points on uber-efficient scoring. However, the rest of the Wolves struggled to keep up, and the Spurs weathered the storm.
Edwards' 55 points was a season high. While he stuffed the stat sheet more than Wembanyama, the Spurs walked away with a win.
Of course, this isn't the first time the Spurs and Wembanyama have given up massive points just to walk away with a victory. Two seasons ago, Jalen Brunson came one point short of setting the New York Knicks' franchise record, although Wembanyama posted 40 points and 20 rebounds, stealing the win and the game ball.
Earlier this season, also against the Knicks, bench players Jordan Clarkson and Miles McBride both scored 20 points, although Julian Champagnie splashed home 11 3-pointers and Wembanyama offered a 31-point double-double.
Of course, when their opponents have a big game, more often than not, the Spurs lose, although Wembanyama and his teammates have found ways to overcome great individual performances.
Aside from Edwards, the Wolves shot a woeful 27.7% from deep. Compare that to the Spurs' 39.5% mark as a team, and it's no wonder they were able to keep the Wolves at bay. Granted, Ewdwards' excellence made a win tough, although the Spurs remain undefeated during their current homestand.
The Spurs will stay at the Frost Bank Center on Monday, hosting the Utah Jazz as a part of the league's MLK Day game slate.
