San Antonio Spurs React to Latest All-Star Game News cover image

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Orlando Magic, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets, cementing Mitch Johnson as an All-Star Game head coach.

On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs overcame a back-to-back and a rough travel day to beat the Orlando Magic 112-103.

Victor Wembanyama poured in 25 points and added five blocks, even without sinking a single 3-pointer. Off the bench, Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper both posted double-digits, and the Spurs took down one of the league's most physical teams.

The biggest win of the night? The Spurs will have a sixth representative at All-Star Weekend.

Mitch Johnson to Coach All-Star Game

All-Star Weekend 2026 will be hosted by the Los Angeles Clippers, although the San Antonio Spurs will be front and center.

Victor Wembanyama has been named an All-Star Game starter, Carter Bryant will be in the dunk contest, and Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and David-Jones Garcia will all play in the Rising Stars Challenge.

The league is yet to reveal who will be in the 3-point shootout and Skills Challenge, but another Spur is heading to LA: Mitch Johnson.

After the Spurs beat the Magic, the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets, so the Spurs own the second-best record in the Western Conference through February 1st. With that, Johnson has been named a head coach for one of the four All-Star teams.

"I don't like to make a big deal out of things," the head coach prefaced. "Coaching the All-Star game will be a heck of an experience and opportunity."

As an American-born coach, Johnson is not expected to coach the Team World squad featuring Wembanyama, but the Frenchman isn't in his competitive headspace just yet.

"I'm so happy for him," said Wembanyama.

Gregg Popovich coached in the All-Star Game four times, and Johnson is the second Spurs' skipper to receive the honor. Keldon Johnson played for both coaches, and he thinks Johnson has done a great job of assuming the mantle.

"That's big time, you know, well-deserved," offered Keldon Johnson. "Mitch really earned the stripes, and he's been amazing for us this year. He's been an amazing leader as a coach on and off the court. I feel like he's an amazing role model for us as a young team. It just shows the dedication that he has to be able to be in the All-Star Game. I hope he knocks it out of the park."

Johnson has been credited with leading one of the league's youngest teams to one of the best records in the NBA, and the team knows that they're still on the rise.

"I think he's done a great job of bringing us together," added Dylan Harper. "I think letting us go, but at the same time, holding us accountable from the top to the bottom, he definitely deserves it."
