As the Thunder face elimination, the MVP finalist battles a viral parody game in court, fueling "soft" labels and hostile crowds ahead of a pivotal Game 6.
The "courtroom'' is different from the "court.''
But "soft'' is "soft,'' and that's what critics are saying about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as he and his Oklahoma City Thunder prep for Game 6 on Thursday.
The San Antonio Spurs are down 3-2 in the Western Conference Finals to the Thunder, so they are facing elimination.
And that - actual basketball - is Storyline No. 1.
But SGA has added a sidebar to the main event as he's apparently tired of being mocked for his habitual flopping.
How so? Sports betting platform Underdog has created a game called "Unethical Hooper'' that mimics the "Operation'' game and features a design of Gilgeous-Alexander ... with players barely touching him getting called for a foul.
Yes, the Spurs would say, it copies real life.
But the MVP Shai is not appreciative of the joke.
Via the New York Times, the lawsuit threats from SGA to Underdog:
“Eric Fishman of law firm ArentFox Schiff LLP, representing Gilgeous-Alexander, asked Underdog to: “permanently cease and desist from any and all use of Mr. Gilgeous-Alexander’s NIL in any and all media, including but not limited to your website (including the Unethical Hoops Website), apps, social media accounts, digital marketing and advertisements, promotional emails, push notifications, affiliate or influencer placements, and any physical goods including but not limited to the board game advertised on the Unethical Hoops Website.”
Is Gilgeous-Alexander well within his rights to be offended? We suppose.
But as the face of the franchise and a face of the NBA, this is still embarrassing in the sense that it creates the impression that he can't take a joke.
As we write this, Underdog is saying it will not "cease and desist.'' Does that mean Gilgeous-Alexander will be inspired in Game 6? Or distracted?
Oh, and will San Antonio fans - attending the home game to back Victor Wembanyama and company - use this lawsuit news to deride SGA even more vigorously than usual, screaming about his floppy "softness''?
Umm. ... yes.
