The San Antonio Spurs lost to the Houston Rockets on Friday night, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The San Antonio Spurs dropped their second straight game to kick off the season on Friday night, falling to the Houston Rockets, 114-110.
The game, held in Austin's Moody Center, was very much a home game for San Antonio, although the Rockets' superstar Kevin Durant is a former Longhorn and received a warm welcome from a friendly crowd. The Spurs, though, did not care about Durant's Lone Star history.
"I'm worried about our team," summed up Devin Vassell pregame. "I'm worried about us getting back on the right track, getting in the winning column. We're excited for the challenge. You know they're a great team with a great coach. Got a little history with them, so we're excited to get going."
In the opening minutes, Durant and Fox got into a mild scuffle. It marked Fox's second attempt this season at getting under his opponents' skin, adding to the "history" Vassell alluded to.
Rockets Stifle Last-Second Spurs' Effort
The Spurs were led by Victor Wembanyama's 25 points. After going only 1-for-13 in the season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanyama shot 9-for-21 from the floor and added 13 rebounds and two blocks for good measure. His most impactful shot, a game-winning layup as the clock wound down, though, was rejected by Amen Thompson.
In that first loss, Stephon Castle's 3-point shooting was the lone bright spot, as he set a career-high with five made 3s. He continued to be solid (although not elite) from distance, going three-for-nine from deep and finishing with 15 points.
Houston, meanwhile, was led by 29 points from Alperen Sengun, with Thompson and Durant having solid nights as well, with 20 points each. Last season, Fred VanVleet missed the entire campaign with a torn ACL, although he's finally returned and knocked all of the rust off. The Western Conference is the Spurs' and Thunder's to lose, although the Rockets are an underrated team.
Sengun is looking to build on last season's All-Star appearance, and he played bully ball on offense against both Wembanyama and Luke Kornet. He doesn't have the height or athleticism to go toe to toe with Wemby, but he certainly has the weight, shoving him around under the basket more than once.
Sengun's tactics seemed to work, as the Spurs have yet to win a game this season. The Spurs will be back in action again on Saturday night, taking on the Dallas Mavericks in a second straight in-state showdown. The Spurs are quickly becoming desperate for their first win of the year.
