Devin Vassell is one of the best shooters in San Antonio Spurs' franchise history, and even with a slow start to the 2026-27 season, the team knows that they can count on him to knock down big shots.
Devin Vassell is fourth on the San Antonio Spurs' all-time 3-point list, having made 796 triples in his career. He trails only Danny Green, Patty Mills, and Manu Ginobili, and boasts a better career percentage than Ginobili.
To start the 2026-27 season, though, the shots haven't been falling as they have in recent years. He's making only 34.1 percent of his shots from distance on 4.6 attempts per game, the lowest volume since his rookie season. Still, he's a standout defender, and excelletn off-ball cutter, and is one of the league's better rebounding guards.
In short, he's doing everything right, and after dropping 19 points and making five triples in Friday's 124-109 win over the Sacramento Kings, the Spurs are expecting Vassell to build on his progress.
Mitch Johnson even gave him a mandate: shoot twice as much as you currenlty are.
Spurs Remain Confident In Vassell
Vassell's first 3-pointer of the night came off the smoothest assist from Stephon Castle you'll ever see. The pass alone was the highlight of the game, and it seemed to help Vassell gain some confidence, seeing one fall early.
"Devin is great for us," summed up Dylan Harper. "He's definitely someone who has come in on multiple occasions and kind of picked the energy up, and some nights we definitely need it, and he always comes through every time. So, I mean, that's just someone we count on, and I think he kind of understands the ebbs and flows of the game and the ups and downs, and every time he comes in the game, he's always making a positive impact."
To the Spurs' credit, they know that Vassell is far and away the best shooter in the starting lineup, even if his percentages this season don't quite reflect it. He and Julian Champagnie are deadly from deep, especially in catch-and-shoot situations, and feeding them has been an easy way to put points on the board.
"I think we've also done a better job in certain games of making a concerted effort to find him and Julian in rhythm and on time and on target," said Johnson. "And those are guys we've got to hunt when they get space. They don't get space a lot of times the way teams guard them. And so when we do have opportunities to get those two guys shots, we have to do that."
It's only nine games into the season. Expect Vassell to find his flow, and as opponents clog the paint to slow down Victor Wembanyama (good luck!) and the Spurs' slashers, Vassell should have good looks after good looks. He just has to keep pulling the trigger.
