A young Spurs fan was seriously injured after an accident during celebrations for San Antonio's win over Oklahoma City in Game 6.
A night of great joy turned tragic for one young Spurs fan celebrating the team's win over the Oklahoma City Thunder at Frost Bank Center in Game 6.
According to News 4 San Antonio, a 17-year-old boy in San Antonio suffered severe head injuries after falling from a moving vehicle while engaging in celebrations around the city.
He was later confirmed to be in critical condition and clinically brain-dead in a devastating and heartbreaking development.
Further reporting from the San Antonio Express News claimed that a police source told them the young man is not expected to recover from these horrific injuries.
The San Antonio Police Department did issue a formal statement on the incident, as it remains under investigation.
"The San Antonio Police Department extends our sympathy to the family, friends and loved ones affected by this tragic and preventable incident," wrote the SAPD.
It continued, "This serves as an important reminder that public safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone celebrating to follow traffic laws, stay inside of your vehicles and follow directions from the officers who are there to keep everyone safe."
While they were away from San Antonio, the Spurs defeated Oklahoma City once again in Game 7 on Saturday, which secured the franchise's seventh trip to the NBA Finals and first since 2014.
This momentous achievement spawned even more festivities throughout the city and the Spurs encouraged elated fans back home to express caution while recognizing the occasion.
"I love y'all. Be safe out there in San Antonio," remarked Spurs rookie sensation Dylan Harper in his postgame media availability.
"We're not done yet. I understand y'all are excited but we got to be safe out there. We love y'all. Please just be safe tonight," urged Harper.
The Spurs shared his words on their X page and captioned it, "Dylan said it best, be safe out there San Antonio!! Celebrate safe, celebrate together."
With at least two more games set to take place this season in the Alamo City, it is an important reminder of how crucial it is to avoid these tragic events like the one that unfortunately unfolded on Thursday after Game 6.
San Antonio hosts its first NBA Finals matchup in 12 seasons on Wednesday, June 3 against the New York Knicks. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from inside Frost Bank Center.
